How many great werewolf movies have you seen in the last 10 years? The last you possibly watched were 2022’sWerewolf by Nightor 2015’sHowl. In the era of computer-generated effects, the werewolf has suffered from too few movies. The main draw is seeing the monster, and with CGI dominating the landscape of monster movies, the monster is not real and not worth seeing. But this year and next, the werewolf is making a comeback. Last month, we previewedfour vampire movies releasing this year, and now we turn our eyes to our other favorite Gothic monsters. In 2024 and 2025, there will be six werewolf movies. This is set to potentially be the biggest year for werewolves since 1981.

The 1980s were a second Golden Age of horror, and the werewolf was there from the start, helping to define the decade with the two biggest and best werewolf movies ever, withAn American Werewolf in LondonandThe Howling, both releasing in 1981. Both of 1981’s classics have been rumored for years to be the targets of remakes, and perhaps this year will convince Hollywood to finally get the ball rolling on them both.

Hellhounds

With the six werewolf movies in 2024 and 2025, we have a little bit of cheese, but we also have some werewolf movies with serious actors and directors who we anticipate will give us some new werewolf classics, or if nothing else, some modern practical effects.

6Hellhounds (June 25, 2025)

Hellhounds

Bikers and werewolves. They belong together. Our first biker werewolf movie came in 1971’sWerewolves on Wheels. The latest in the sub-genre isHellhounds.Hellhoundsis the only entry on the list that has already been released on streaming in January.Hellhoundsgives us a ’90s straight-to-video vibe, in both a good and bad way.

A Throwback to ’90s Horror

Everyone in the trailer is a gnarly, bad-to-the-bone biker or bounty hunter, and there is lots of gun-porn and even some cross-bow action. The budget werewolf costumes reach forHowling-style designs but come back with lifeless masks, lacking the animatronics of the iconic 1981 wolves.

5Blackout (Q1 2024)

We still do not have a trailer forBlackout, but MovieWeb’sSydney Ghan saw the movie at the Fantasia Festival and reviewed it. The film features quality practical werewolf makeup, leaning in the wolf man side of design. The title refers to the main character, Charley’s blackout episodes, in which he cannot remember the night before.

Symbolism for Alcoholism

The werewolf is a parallel to Charley’s alcoholic blackouts – it is hard to say it is subtext when it is right there on the surface. During those wolfing episodes, the film delivers on the gore, even if the movie never succeeds at creating real tension. Of horror trash connoisseur Joe Bob Briggs’ three B’s of (B) horror, blood, beast, and breasts;Blackoutreportedly checks all three boxes.

4Werewolves / Year 2 (TBD 2024)

Werewolves, previously known asYear 2until last week, is about survivors of a werewolf apocalypse that began a year before during a supermoon that triggered those exposed to the moon to turn into werewolves. The exposition is a little superfluous (we could handle the origin of the plague going unexplained), but we are here for Frank Grillo and the practical werewolves he promises the film has.

The Purge Meets Werewolves

Grillo told MovieWeb thatWerewolvesis, “The Purgemeets werewolves.” We do not have a trailer yet, but we have images of Grillo from the movie and one of the seven-foot-tall werewolves he described. This promises to be one of the best werewolf movies in years, with heavy action and massive werewolves likeThe Howling.

Big Badisthe next project from Christopher Landon, who directed thehilariously funFreakyandHappy Death Day. Landonwas going to directScream 7before Melissa Barrera was fired by Spyglass Media, and then Jenna Ortega left, allegedly in support of Barrera’s speech rights. It is speculated that the drama led to Landon’s choice to leave the project as well. Given the carnival rides that wereFreakyandHappy Death Day, we have high hopes for Landon’s werewolf movie,Big Bad.

2What Remains of Us (TBD 2024)

The excitement aboutWhat Remains of Usis largely to do withits lead,Game of Thronesstar Kit Harington. Harington plays a father living with his family in a small house in the English countryside in 1965, who turns into a werewolf during full moons. The family deals with the curse by locking Harington up, but as expected in a horror movie, the werewolf will escape.

A Father and Daughter Story

The story is told from the perspective of Harington’s character’s 10-year-old daughter, played by Caoilinn Springall. A trailer has not been released, and we only have one image of Harington from the film.

1Wolf Man (July 13, 2025)

We end the list with our most hotly anticipated werewolf, the remake of the 1941 Universal classic that started it all. Previously, Universal released a remake in 2010, starring Benicio Del Toro and featuring makeup by the man behind the wolves inAn American Werewolf in London, Rick Baker.

Leigh Whannell Tackles Another Universal Monster

Wolf Manwas previously going to star Ryan Gosling and be directed by Derek Cianfrance (The Place Behind the Pines), but Gosling left the role in December and will now serve as an executive producer. The film will now star Christopher Abbot and be directed by Leigh Whannell, the director and writer of 2020’sThe Invisible Man.

Whannell surprised us with some of the best suspense in the last 20 years of horror withThe Invisible Manand delivered a plot that left us questioning the reliability of our point-of-view character, played by Elisabeth Moss. Whannell left us thinking about his movie after, and that is what great horror does – it haunts you.Wolf Manis set for an October release, the weekend before All Hallow’s Eve.
