After years of development, theRed Sonjareboot has finally arrived. The action fantasy film has facedtrial and tribulation, but the official trailer unleashes the long-awaited return of the powerful warrior. The question is, was it worth the wait? Although fans will be the judge when it releases later this year, the new footage doesn’t spark much confidence in the reboot.
The first trailer forRed Sonjafeatures Matilda Lutz (Revenge) in the starring role, alongside Martyn Ford, Robert Sheehan, Wallis Day, Michael Bisping, Philip Winchester, Trevor Eve, Luca Pasqualino, and Rhona Mitra. The film wasdirected by M.J. Bassett(Solomon Kane,Altered Carbon) based on a screenplay by Tasha Huo (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft).Red Sonjais set to hit theaters on August 15 and on digital platforms August 29. Long-Awaited ‘Red Sonja’ Reboot Will Be Released “Later This Year” Following Multiple Delays

Based on the character created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith in 1973,Red Sonjais the second live-action adaptation of the beloved property. In 1985, Brigitte Nielsen played the warrior alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, who portrayed Lord Kalidor. The 2025 reboot will feature an entirely different set of characters, as well as a"darker tone"that fits more in line with modern storytelling. However, if the trailer is anything to go by, the more serious interpretation of the material may be undercut by a lack of on-screen quality.
TheRed Sonjareboot has seen several major creative overhauls over the past few years. Before M. J. Bassett was hired to direct,X-Mendirector Bryan Singer was attached to helm the action reboot. However, after a series of sexual assault allegations derailed his career, as well as troubling behind-the-scenes issues during his film productions, Singer was eventually fired fromRed Sonja. Then, the studio tappedJoey Soloway to write and directthe film in 2019.Thunderbolts*star Hannah John-Kamen was attached to star in the film as the famous warrior, but it all fell apart soon after.
Eventually,Red Sonjalost both Soloway and John-Kamen. However, with a script in hand from Tasha Huo, Bassett was brought on to bring the character to life.Revengestar Matilda Lutz nabbed the lead role, and the rest of the cast was filled out.Red Sonjabegan production in late 202 and continued throughout 2023. After spending some time in post-production, the film will finally release theatrically this August. It’s clear there may not be a lot of faith in its box office, however, as a digital release date has been announced two weeks after its theatrical debut.
