Over the weekend, directorJames Wandescended upon WonderCon to promote his upcoming thrillersLights OutandThe Conjuring 2, which both arrive this summer. But the filmmaker also discussed his highly-anticipatedAquamanmovie. We don’t know whenproductionwill begin yet, but the filmmaker teased new details in an interview with/Film, hinting that fans will see new “sea monsters and cool creatures.” Here’s what the filmmaker had to say about this unique character.
“I think, like most people, we are familiar withAquaman. We grew up reading or watching this character on the peripheral. I was never so in depth withAquamanas, let’s say, I was withX-Men. I grew up lovingX-Men,Spider-ManandBatman. Those are obviously the key big ones, but there’s always something kind of cool about Aquaman still, the idea of creating a huge world that is on our planet. That’s the thing aboutAquamanthat’s cool is he’s not an alien, right? He’s from our planet and he’s from a society that we’re not privy to in the context of the story. Isn’t it crazy to think that we’ve explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff.”
Yesterday, the filmmaker teased in another interview that hisAquaman moviewill be “fun,” and will present a “badass” version of this iconic character. Fans who sawBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceover the weekend got their first look atJason Momoaas the title character during a brief cameo in this superhero adventure. While no production start date has been officially announced, the cast is starting to come together.
We reported in January thatAmber Heardis in talks to play the female lead,Mera, who first will make herDC ComicsExtended Universe (DCEU) debut inJustice League Part 1. In theDC Comics, Mera hailed from Xebel, an underwater colony made of descendants of Atlantis separatists, who were exiled from the kingdom. Mera was originally sent by her people to kill Aquaman, but they ended up falling in love, and they sought to unite all of Atlantis through their marriage. Mera has most of the same powers asAquaman, but she also has what is known as aquakinesis, which allows her to manipulate water with her mind and create hard objects out of water, which can be used as weapons. Aquaman and Mera have also had a rocky relationship in the comics, with Mera turning against him on several occasions, forcing him to choose between her and their child.
