Like it or not, we are getting moreAssassin’s Creedlive-action adaptations. Possibly a lot more. And what’s more is that, in addition to a movie sequel being in the works, it looks like Ubisoft is also working on anAssassin’s CreedTV series. The icing on the cake to this whole thing is the in-the-works show could wind up onNetflix, which makes the prospect a lot more intriguing.
Aymar Azaizia, Head of Content forAssassin’s Creedat Ubisoft, recently took some time to do an AMA onReddit. At one point, someone asked about a potential TV project related toAssassin’s Creedand, while he couldn’t say much about it,Aymar Azaiziadid confirm that such a project, in some form or another, is in the works. Here is what he had to say about it.
“Nope. It’s like the movie guys, we will take our time, to get sure we deliver something we can be proud of, but if you wander if it’s on our plan… YES.”
That doesn’t give us a whole lot to go on, but it does mean that Ubisoft is very much committed to the idea that Assassin’s Creed can have a life outside of the wildlysuccessful video game series. While we don’t know much, or really anything, about this TV series, there is some evidence that suggests it could wind up on Netflix. Last year, Ubisoft CEOYves Guillemotstated that the company was in talks with Netflix for a TV series. They didn’t say what that series was at the time but, if we put two and two together here, it seems likely that theNetflix serieswould beAssassin’s Creed.
We also know that, despite the fact theAssassin’s Creedmovie underperformed at the box office, a sequel is in the works.Assassin’s Creedonly made $240 million worldwide at the box office, working from a steep $125 million production budget. That means if the movie turned a profit, it was minimal. Not only that, but the movie was thrashed by critics, currently holding a measly 17 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It didn’t do much better with the fans, as the movie has a 50 percent audience approval rating. That said, a TV series could present an opportunity to fix a lot of the problems with theAssassin’s Creedmovie. Things could be more fleshed out. They could take time to properly develop characters and story elements. Also, Netflix has an outstanding track record with their original content. So that is worth thinking about.
No matter what form thisAssassin’s CreedTV show takes or when it comes to fruition, it is doubtful thatMichael Fassbender, or any of the otherA-list starswho were featured in the movie, would be involved. Still, the prospect of anAssassin’s CreedNetflix series is something that could excite fans of the games and those who wanted more out of the movie. The fact that anyone with aNetflix subscriptionwould be able to watch the show without having to pay for it certainly wouldn’t hurt anything.
