Stranded in space, with no control of their vehicle, led by morons! That is the situation last encountered in Hugh Laurie’s incredibleAvenue 5. But what is happening now? With the epic season two finale of the titular cruise ship Avenue 5 spared destruction by poorly designed interstellar explosives (So that’s why they call themmiss-iles!), fanatics cannot help but wonder – where is the next season? A refreshing and truly unique take on the science fiction genre,Avenue 5has garnered fan praise as well as critical acclaim for subtle political commentary intermingled with comedy.

But as many enthusiasts are aware by now, the ongoing WGA (Writers Guild of America) and SAG / AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild) strike has resulted in the post-production of prior principal photography inevitably slowing down. The die-hard cries of sci-fi viewers won’t be muffled, however, and thus we will examine everything we know aboutAvenue 5season three so far, which – as Billy the Engineer would remind us – is just enough!

Avenue 5 Season 2

Could They Be That Stupid?

The show that won the titleofcapturing human stupiditybetter than any other series(an aside to the Captain being the constant victim of foolish plans and hair-brained schemes) will no doubt find some way to continue. Series three would likely see a continuance in the faulty three-way command structure initiated by the Captain (Laurie) alongside Billie and Rav. Of course, the idiotic man-child Judd will likely try to pretend to be in control with his woman servant Iris, nodding her head and hating every minute of it.

Avenue 5presented a new take on the space-faring genre typically so serious in science fiction, especially in America. Not since BBC’sRed Dwarfhas the community of sci-fi lovers reveled in the antics of a cruise liner in space.Avenue 5reminds enthusiasts that high-concept andhard-core science fictionstill has room for amusing human interaction and highbrow comedy. With all that is at stake in the streaming entertainment market, would HBO (and its streaming offspring, Max) truly be as unintelligent as to end a series beloved by so many? Unfortunately, for now,Avenue 5is on hiatus.

Avenue 5 Is Canceled, But Is It Really Canceled?

The ending of season two ofAvenue 5left many unanswered questions and a great deal of open-ended plot threads. There is no way the show could be summarily dismissed. Is there? With all of the promotion going intoWarner Bros. Discovery’s new streaming service Max, would the best-selling streaming service right now be so foolish as to cancel one of its most promising properties?

The answer appears to be yes – but only temporarily. For the moment, we are not sure if there is hope for a season 3 of the HBO comedy – there is no update on a potential release yet. However, in an interview, creator Armando Iannucci expressed interest in continuing the show and implied that HBO had not canceled it long-term.

“HBO does not really renew a season until the previous season is going out,” Iannucci told EW. “Because we got delayed by the pandemic by about 18 months, we knew that meant everyone’s contracts would run out because they’re contracted for a certain period. We just thought everyone’s got 101 other things to be doing so it would be unfair to kind of keep them on hold in limbo. But everyone wants to do more. HBO is very keen. We will make more when we can corral everyone together again. Everyone is up for it, and we’ve already got ideas and thoughts about what happens next.”
