The wide range of characters and plots has opened up all kinds of opportunities for interesting dialogue and debates over the years. Marvel films have tackled grief, anxiety, legacy, and many more relatable themes. Marvel writers have given plenty of uplifting advice, even though some of the most memorable one-liners are witty punchlines. Here are the nine best inspirational quotes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“I only act like I know everything.” -Captain America: The Winter Solider
Natasha, aka Black Widow, is a smart and sassy character. She is especially good at helping Steve Rogers to relax and goof around a little. As much as everyone is impressed by her, she is the first one to admit that she doesn’t really know everything. As contradictory as it may seem, her being open with her friends that she isn’t as confident in herself as she may seem only makes her more charming.
“I make grave mistakes all the time. Everything seems to work out.“Thor: Ragnarök
Thor: Ragnarökis known for its concentratedTaika Waititi jokes. Thor’s nonchalant statement about mistakes is certainly charming and funny, but it is also encouraging for people who suffer from guilt over past mistakes. Even the most devastating and irreversible mistakes can be fixed. Thor’s mistakes often put the fate of the galaxy in jeopardy. Hey, if things work out for him, surely they will work out for the rest of us.
“We never lose our demons, Mordo. We only learn to live above them.” -Doctor Strange
Doctor Strangeis full of little gems like this one. When talking to Mordo, one of her students, the Ancient One, corrects his belief that he has overcome his demons. Instead, she recognizes that even the darkest moments in a person’s life are a part of them. There is no undoing the bad things someone has done, but they have the chance to learn from them and become better for it.
On its own, this quote is simple enough, but especially when put in context, it actually means a whole lot. The legendary Star-Lord lost Gamora during the battle for the Infinity Stones, but a past version of her came back after the Avengers traveled through time. At first, he thought that this was his second chance and that because she had loved him once, she would fall in love with him again.

However, at the end ofGuardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, they decide to part ways peacefully. Even though they could have fallen in love, Star-Lord accepts that they both need to move on, and he tells Gamora that even though she isn’t who he thought she’d be, she’s enough as she is. It can be hard to accept loss or even to move on from a relationship, but this moment demonstrates the maturity needed to leave the past in the past.
“I can’t control their fear, only my own.” -Captain America: Civil War
Wanda, the powerful Scarlet Witch, runs into some trouble at the beginning ofCaptain America: Civil War.She is one of the few Avengers not beloved by the public. To keep her and others safe, Vision keeps her locked in the Avengers' headquarters. She stays for a long time until Hawkeye (or Clint) comes to bust her out. Hawkeye is no match for Vision, but he attempts to give Wanda the courage to break herself free.
Vision warns Wanda that if she leaves, then people will always be afraid of her, and responds with this quote defying others' perceptions. Everyone knows what it is like to feel disliked or ridiculed, but sometimes the most important vote of acceptance is our own.

In the firstGuardians of the Galaxyfilm, this line serves as a perfect introduction to Drax’s character. Rocket remarks that Drax’s kind do not understand sarcasm, and most jokes go over their heads. Drax responds defensively but only proves Rocket’s point. Even though the line is meant to be funny, it also offers a deeper meaning that sometimes defensive comments are more hurtful than helpful.
“The hardest choices require the strongest wills.“Avengers: Infinity War
One ofMarvel’s baddest villainsalso has some of the best lines. As Thanos describes the logic behind his plan for population control, Doctor Strange frowns at the thought of losing half of everyone he loves. Thanos knows that the cost for his plan is great but believes that the cost proves its value.

Thanos' commitment to his plan, coupled with his strong will, are part of what makes him such a formidable enemy to the Avengers. To fight against him, the team needs to muster all of their willpower and even make the ultimate sacrifice. The battle of wills is an epic conflict for true heroes and villains.
“You are the product of all who came before you, the legacy of your family. You are your mother, and whether you like it or not, you are also your father."-Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Shang-Chi is running from the legacy of his father, the Wenwu. When he meets his aunt in the magical location of Tao Lo, she tells him that he is a result of generations. While he is the good of his father, he is also the good part of his father. He might not like what his father has become, but he cannot run from his past anymore or deny who he is. Shang-Chi is a reminder of the complicated legacy family leaves behind on a person and that they get to define who they are.
“Love is a dagger. It’s a weapon to be wielded far away or up close. You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful until it makes you bleed.” -Loki
Leave it to Loki to give one of the most beautiful yet convoluted quotes. His analogy about love being a dagger feels like one of his illusions; it is layered, full of hidden meanings, and just a little confusing. InLokion Disney+, Loki says this to Sylvie as they travel together through the end of the world. His remark that love is both beautiful and painful is one that not only all Lokis can relate to but also all audience members.
“I don’t have to prove anything to you” -Captain Marvel
ThroughoutCaptain Marvel,Carol Danvershas been listening to Yon-Rog about how he is “too emotional”. This is sadly a sentiment many women in the real world are told every day. She cannot use her natural powers because then it would not be equal for him, and he realistically couldn’t control her. When she unlocked her powers, he tries to play these games with her again, saying the only way she can prove she is strong is to defeat him without her powers.
Carol Danvers quickly shoots him with an energy blast, letting him know that she doesn’t have to prove anything to him, she gets to set the terms. Nobody will tell her what she can’t be or to control her emotions anymore, and that is a lesson many
