SawandThe Princess Bridestar Cary Elwes has just nabbed his next movie role, as he’s just been cast in the newBlack Christmasmovie. While it’s been reported Elwes will be starring in a lead role, details on his character have not yet been revealed. The movie itself was just unveiled recently by Blumhouse Productions with a teaser poster showing a bloody candy cane. A release date for Dec. 13 of this year - a Friday the 13th - was also revealed on the poster. Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions is producing, along with Ben Cosgrove and Adam Hendricks of Divide/Conquer. Zac Locked, also of Divide/Conque, will be executive producing.
Serving as a reboot of the 1974 slasher movie, the newBlack Christmaswill have a similar premise set in the modern day. It will follow the sorority girls of Hawthorne College prepping for the holiday season. An unknown stalker then begins murdering the girls one by one on the campus, leading to the young women of this generation to fight back if they have any hope of surviving the holiday massacre. In addition toCary Elwes, some of the other names confirmed for the cast include Aleyse Shannon (Charmed), Brittany O’Grady (Star), Lily Donoghue (Jane the Virgin), and Caleb Eberhardt (The Post). Sophia Takal (Into the Dark: New Year, New You) is also attached to direct.
Directed by Bob Clark, the originalBlack Christmassimilarly follows a group of sorority sistersterrorized by a murderous stalker during the Christmas season. The cast included such names as Olivia Hussey (Romeo and Juliet), Keir Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey), Margot Kidder (Superman), and John Saxon (A Nightmare on Elm Street). The movie is a cult classic and widely considered by horror fans as one of the very bestclassic Christmas slasher flicks, even serving as an inspiration for John Carpenter’s seminal horror movieHalloween. Unlike most other slashers, the movie concludes without revealing the identity of the killer, and there were also oddly never any official sequels.
While there wasn’t ever aBlack Christmas 2, the movie wasn’t immune to getting the remake treatment. The cult classic waspreviously remade in 2006 by director Glen Morgan, this time starring Katie Cassidy (Gossip Girl), Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane). Of course, this version of the movie also features a sorority house under attack during the holiday season. While the movie was technically a success as it doubled its budget, it was met with mostly negative reviews, landing it a 15% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s a little strange the newBlack Christmashas committed to a December release date before the project has already begun shooting. Hopefully the fast-tracking of the production won’t lead to a decline in quality. As of now, the project is slated to hit the big screen on Aug 01, 2025.
