The two actresses appeared on the Friday, May 9 episode ofThe Today Showto highlight the importance of protecting children from meningitis, as part of GSK’s Ask2BSure campaign.
The Instagram photo the two shared simply featured the caption “#OG,” a nod to their originalBuffypartnership. From 1997 to 2003, the two actresses co-starred in the hit series as best friends Buffy Summers (Gellar), a teenager battling vampires and demons while dealing with adolescence, and Willow Rosenberg (Hannigan), who evolved from a shy and intelligent teenager into a powerful witch that becomes a key player in Buffy’s battle against evil.
Fans immediately flocked to the comments section of the Instagram post, with many expressing that the reunion picture would “break the internet” while basking in the nostalgia of seeing the two together nearly two decades after the series concluded. Of course, this also left many hopefuls for a Willow and Buffy reunion in Hulu’s upcoming revival series. One user wrote: “We absolutely NEED this reunion on the new Buffy sequel. During theirThe Today Showappearance, the two briefly spoke aboutBuffy, with Gellar revealing her kids had watched the series during COVID and had enjoyed it. Hannigan (who is married to and shares two children with Buffy alum Alexis Denisof) revealed her kids had yet to watch the show.
The originalBuffy the Vampire Slayerseries, which also starred David Boreanaz as Angel, James Marsters as Spike, Nicholas Brendon as Xander, Seth Green as Oz, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia, and the late Michelle Trachtenberg as Buffy’s younger sister Dawn, aired for seven successful seasons until 2003.Buffy the Vampire Slayerand its spin-off seriesAngelare currently available to stream on Hulu.
Academy Award-winning filmmakerChloé Zhao will direct Hulu’s rebootfrom a script written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). Gellar will reprise the iconic role of Buffy Summers (and will serve as a producer), butthe series will revolve around a new vampire slayer. No additional casting news has been reported.
While Gellar and Hannigan have previously acknowledged some on-set tension during their time co-starring in the original show, their recent reunion demonstrates their strong bond today. In a 2022 interview (viaE! News) Gellar shared:
“Look, we worked really hard hours. We were young, we had ups and downs. Everybody had arguments. It wasn’t rosy. Nobody gets along all the time. Alyson and I had moments. There’s no question. But you’re young.”
She also shared that she believes the situation “would have been different if it was today,” which leaves us even more optimistic about a Buffy reboot reunion for the two.
