Channing Tatumis outnumbered, outgunned, and may well be out of his depth in hisDie Hard-riffactionthriller, which is coming to free streaming. Tatum, or The Tate, as his friends (probably, and if they don’t, they should) call him, joins forces withJamie Foxxin the action outing, which bears a striking similarity to Gerard Butler’s far more successful franchise.
Occasionally, the Hollywood stars align, and audiences are giftedpairs of similar cinematic experiencesin quick succession, with the likes ofVolcanoandDante’s PeakandDeep ImpactandArmageddonbeing the best-known examples. The third example on the list has to beWhite House DownandOlympus Has Fallen, with the former being led by Tatum as a veteran who finds himself protecting both his daughter and the President of the United States when the White House is taken over by terrorists.

Not wanting to disappoint his young daughter with the bad news, Cale takes her on a tour of the White House. While he and his daughter are there, a heavily armed paramilitary group attacks and seizes control. As the nation’s government dissolves in chaos, only Cale can save his daughter, the president and the country.”
Gerard Butler’s ‘Has Fallen’ Franchise Left White House Down in the Dust
While you would think that, much likeOlympus Has Fallen,White House Downhadthe potential to spark an action franchise, a sequel has never materialized. There is little difference between the critical and audience response to both movies, with Channing Tatum’s effort in fact faring better with critics (52% toOlympus Has Fallen’s50% on Rotten Tomatoes) and only slightly worse with audiences (62% to 66% on the Popcornmeter).
However, the reason there has never been a follow-up is unsurprisingly due to the difference in box office, withWhite House Downgrossing $205 million worldwide against a budget of $150 million, whileOlympus Has Fallenearned $170 million against its $70 million budget. Of course, the two movies being so similar surely didn’t help, with even Google taking you straight toLondon Has Fallenwhen you search for “White House Down sequel.”

While Channing Tatum may never return to protect the president, the actor has plenty of other projects in the pipeline. After years of trying and campaigning for the role, Tatum finally starred as a live-action iteration of beloved X-Men member, Gambit, inDeadpool & Wolverine. And it’s a role he willreprise in the upcoming MCU epic,Avengers: Doomsday. Aside from Marvel, Tatum will star in the crime dramaRoofmanalongside Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn, and Peter Dinklage, and the thrillerJosephinealongside Gemma Chan.
