Chris Farleypassed away after a fatal drug overdose on December 18th, 1997. 21 years after his death, Adam Sandler, David Spade, and others posted tributes to the comedian on social media. The trio were pretty inseparable during their stint onSaturday Night Livein the early 1990s, starring in numerous skits together as well as movies likeBilly Madisonwith Sandler, and later inTommy BoyandBlack Sheepwith Spade. When Spade and Sandler were on screen together inSNL, they could often be seen breaking character and laughing at Farley.

The latestAdam SandlerNetflix special,100% Fresh, contains a song tribute that the comedian wrote for Chris Farley. Sandler posted a link to the song and captioned it by saying, “We all miss you, bud.“David Spadesaid, “21 years ago one of the greats died,” and posted a link to some hilarious outtakes fromTommy Boy, one of which features Farley flashing Spade and freaking him out pretty good. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 21 years since Farley passed away.

Stephen Colbertalso posted a tribute to Farley. The two met back at the beginning of their comedy careers at Second City. Farley ended up getting his gig atSaturday Night Livein 1990 and was on the show until 1995. Colbert had this to say about Farley.

“Chris Farley and I started at Second City on the same day. You knew the minute you saw him on stage he was great. He was sweet and smart and funny. When I heard he had died, 21 years ago today, I fell to the ground. Rest In Peace.”

Chris Farley died at the age of 33 from an accidental overdose of cocaine and morphine and was found by his brother in his apartment. The comedian also had health problems because of his weight. At the time of his death, he was 296 lbs. He reportedly sought treatment for drugs, alcohol, and his weight issues 17 times over the years, but he kept going back to his demons. Advanced atherosclerosis was also cited as a “significant contributing factor,” toChris Farley’s death. The comedian’s death has often been compared to John Belushi, who died at the same age under similar circumstances.
