The Super Mario Bros. Movieis almost here, and that means the cast have been out on their promotional tour for the new adaptation of Nintendo’s most iconic game character. Despite its initial casting controversy, the film looks set to be one of the biggest hitters of the year so far when it makes its debut in April, and in a new interview,Chris Pratthas suggested that plans for where a sequel could go are teased in a post-credits scene.

InThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, intrepid plumbers Mario and Luigi, voiced respectively by Pratt and Charlie Day, find themselves being sucked into a portal where Luigi becomes the prisoner of King Bowser (Jack Black). Incorporating many of the video game franchise’s characters and locations, Mario must step up to save the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser and his brother all within a reasonable runtime. When it comes to where the franchise could go beyond this, Pratt has revealed that audiences should stick around for the post-credits scene to find out. He toldCBR:

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

“Listen, there’s like, at the end of the film, there’s a post-credit sequence that gives you a taste of what the sequel could be about. And that gets me very, very excited. But there’s been talk of Luigi’s Mansion. That was a GameCube game. I think that would be great.”

The Super Mario Bros. Franchise Is Already Being Planned.

Even beforeThe Super Mario Bros. Moviehas had the chance to make an impact on the box office, a sequel is already being teased, but various spin-off have also been touted early on, with the likes ofSeth Rogen’s Donkey Kongbeing a strong contender to get their own movie in the future. Considering the film is made by Universal and Illumination, who together have delivered theDespicable Mefranchise and itsMinionsspin-off movies, it is unlikely that they are going to hold back on pumping out a wide range of Mario related projects in the not too distant future.

Although discussions around Super Mario Bros. big screen outing began a decade ago, the timing ofThe Super Mario Bros. Moviecould not be better timed. In the last few years, game rivals Sega have seen their little blue mascot Sonic take Hollywood by storm with two live-action movies, and now it looks like Mario’s animated outing is going to do the same.Sonic the Hedgehog 3is currently being worked on, along with a Knuckles spin-off, so there is nothing to suggest that the Mario franchise will not be heading the same way.

If a Donkey Kong movie is in contention, then it is something that Seth Rogen would love to see happen and believes it could all be a family thing. He said:

“There’s a lot of opportunity there. I think the family unit of the Kongs seems to be — and if the Fast and Furious movies have taught us anything [it’s] that it’s all about family.”

Naturally all of this will be dependent on how wellThe Super Mario Bros. Movieperforms at the box office, which we will discover when the film opens on April 5.
