A new dramatic take onCluelessis being developed for the small screen. The Dionne character from the original movie will be the focus of the hour long series. Sources say the new show is being shopped around by CBS Studios and there is reportedly already a lot of interest from networks and streaming platforms. In addition to a dramatic element, the series is also said to incorporate a mystery surrounding Alicia Silverstone’s Cher character, who is not attached to reprise the role on the show.
The newCluelessseries has been described as “Mean GirlsmeetsRiverdalemeets a Lizzo music video.” It isset in high schoollike the original. Additionally, the show is described as a “baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latté and Adderall-fueled,” which sounds interesting, to say the least. It’s going to be a look at what happens “when the high school queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans.”
Dionne will deal with the “pressures of being the newmost popular girl in school,” in the newCluelessseries, “while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend, all in a setting that is uniquely 2020 L.A.” This will definitely take the franchise and turn it on its head and one can easily see theRiverdalecomparisons. But, what is it going to look like? We’re still waiting for further details about the mysterious new series and exactly what the series will look like or if any of the original cast will appear for cameos or other roles. Additionally, the series has yet to be cast, so we don’t know who will be playing Dionne this time around.
TheCluelessseries is written by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (Will & Grace) and it sounds pretty out there and unlike anything we’ve seen from Cher and crew. CBS TV Studios has the TV rights to the 1995 movie, which was written and directed by Amy Heckerling. It starred Alicia Silverstone as Cher, Stacey Dash as Dionne, along with Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd. Paramount Network Television was behind the 1996 half-hour seriesClueless, created by Heckerling, which ended up running for three seasons.
