Dave Filoni, a key creative, writer, and director in theStar Warsfranchisehas teased that fans' dreams of an R-ratedStar Warsproject could come true in the future. The long-loved sci-fi franchise has already given fans a lot to be happy about. An incredible original trilogy? Check. Prequels that seem to get better with age? Check. A serialized, episodic western following a bounty hunter with a laser blaster? Check. All fans need now is to see someone get chopped clean in half with a lightsaber.

Filoni (thecreator behind shows like AhsokaandTales of the Jedi) recently spoke with Josh Horowitz on theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast, alongsideAhsoka’s Roasrio Dawson and Hayden Christensen, to discuss future projects in the universe. One question broached to the long-timeStar Warswriter and director was the possibility of an R-rated project in the franchise’s future. Filoni gave an open-minded response, saying “Sure, I mean, I don’t know. It’s interesting.”

Dave Filonithen brought upAndor, theStar Warsset series on Disney+. While the series isn’t R-rated, it contains very mature themes for aStar Wars Project. Filoni used the show as an example for audiences wanting that kind of storytelling, but “whatever we do, it has to be really well done.” He continued:

“When you look at something that’s taken as different, likeAndor, it’s so well done. I think that there’s an audience for that.”

While Filoni didn’t spend too long on the subject, he declared that the most important thing for any newStar Warsproject is that the creators behind them infuse their unique voices into the story. Filoni continued:

“I think that it encompasses all types of styles, and the creatives of these particular stories driving it is kind of the most important thing, and they should do something that’s within their comfort zone,” Filoni shared. “Otherwise, just imagine that everyone’s gonna come and pretend that they’re George Lucas, and they’re not.”

Dave Filoni Still Believes Star Wars Should Inspire Children

So, it certainly sounds like an R-ratedStar Warsproject could be happening in the future. However, during the conversation, Filoni revealed the only hurdle stopping him from taking the leap intoStar Warsmovies and shows aimed at an older audience. Growing up watching, and being inspired byStar Warsis a tale as old as time for Hollywood directors, writers, producers, etc. Evenbefore the franchise was bought by Disney, George Lucas' movies inspired a whole generation of young storytellers and fans, and the prequels and new sequels have done the same for subsequent generations.

Daisy Ridley addressed how many times she is currently contracted to return as Rey Skywalker in upcoming Star Wars movies.

Filoni doesn’t want to remove this aspect fromStar Wars. Despite being open and intrigued by the idea of an R-ratedStar Warsproject, Filoni said it’s always important “to be hitting the imagination of the kids out there, so that they can grow up and appreciate those things.”
