David Arquetteseemed to have come to the end of his run in theScreamfranchise in this year’s fifth movie in the franchise. However, despite the character meeting a grisly demise inScream, it seems that Arquette would be more than happy to return to the role again in the future, commenting that nothing is ever off limits in this kind of franchise.
Although it is true that many movie villains have had a good run for their money after being dispatched multiple times in many different and elaborate ways, it is less often that a victim in a horror film is “born again,” unless it is by a retcon such as in David Gordon Green’s recentHalloweenmovies. However, David Arquette seems to be undeterred by that and clearly would return to his role as Dewey Riley if it became an option. Speaking withComicBookMovie, Arquette said:

“I know, it was really sweet to see the reaction of the fans. It was hard. It was a project I really loved being part of. They went off to do number six and I was like, ‘Oh, okay…’ [Laughs] It’s hard. It’s something that’s really close to my heart, but I love how they handled it. I think my character had a really good role in Scream 5 and had a lot to do. That was really nice. We’ll see…
“Who knows, anything is possible. I mean, how many movies have Jason or Mike Myers been in? Not that Dewey’s a killer, but there is a coming-back-to-life element within these horror films.”

TheScreamfranchise itself was thought to have died along with its creator Wes Craven, with the fifth movie having taken a decade to make and at many points during that time seeming to be destined to live in development hell forever. However, with the return of original cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, 2022’sScreambecame a hit at the beginning of this year, and a sequel was immediately green-lit.
While Arquette’s character’s demise andNeve Campbell’s real-life pay disputemeans thatScream 6will only see Cox keep the fires burning, she will be joined by a number of survivors from Scream and alsoHayden Panettiere, who reprises herScream 4role as Kirby Reed, a character who was also thought to have perished at the hands of Ghostface. With these familiar faces, some new arrivals and a new city setting,Scream 6is taking the franchise in a new direction, but with a familiar white-faced killer stalking the central characters.
Scream 6will hit cinemas in March 2023, and with more sequels already being discussed, there could well be a chance for David Arquette to make a surprise return to the franchise again at some point, but how exactly that would come about currently seems to be just a nice thought rather than a real possibility.
