As possibly interesting as it may have been, Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool won’t be showing up inSpider-Man 3, or whatever the sequel toSpider-Man: Far From Homeends up being called. We first heard rumors at the end of May that Marvel’s future plans for the Merc With a Mouth may involve everyone’s favorite webslinger. Now, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has stepped in to extinguish any hope of that happening.
Spider-Man: Far From Homeis just around the corner and the press tour is officially underway. Kevin Feige, during a recent interview, was asked about thoseDeadpoolrumors specifically. While he admits that the studio is currently mulling over the best way to incorporate Wade Wilson, as well as theX-Menand theFantastic Fourinto the MCU, now that the Disney merger with Fox is complete, that rumor isn’t going to be part of the equation. “No I mean we’re certainly having conversations about the future of all of those Fox properties. How to weave them in and when to weave them in. That one, in particular, is not the case.”
So at least we can rule out one possibility.Disney getting the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpoolin the Fox buyout was one of the most high-profile elements of the whole deal, given what that means for the future of the MCU. WhileDark Phoenixended the current version of theX-Menfranchise, paving the way for a reboot down the line, Ryan Reynolds' version of Wade Wilson is expected to make the jump. But that could prove to be complicated.
TheDeadpool movies firmly exist in the previously established X-Men universe. Since Marvel Studios doesn’t want to bring that universe over, they will have to walk a fine line. Perhaps they could use the multiple snaps of the Infinity Gauntlet inInfinity WarandAvengers: Endgameto explain Wade Wilson’s sudden appearance in the MCU? TheSpider-Man: Far From Hometrailer, if we take Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio at his word (which we probably shouldn’t), reveals that the snaps ripped open the multiverse. So it’s possible that could bring the character into the fold. It just won’t be alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in his inevitable next solo outing.
TheDeadpoolmovies, unlike the most recentX-Menmovies, have proved to be tremendous hits at the box office, bringing in a combined $1.56 billion at the global box office. To boot, both movies were met with widespread critical acclaim. Disney loves money and there is still plenty to be made with Ryan Reynolds as the fan-favorite character. So, one way or another, they’re going to find a way to bring him into the MCU fold.
