Technically,Deadpoolserves as both anX-Menand aNew Mutantscrossover, as it features Colossus from Professor X’s original superhero team and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, one of the founding members of the later, younger mutant enclave. But fans want a trueX-MenandDeadpoolcrossover, where the Merc with the Mouth joins the entire line-up of mutants in battle. That notion is still very much possible, according toX-Men: Apocalypsedirector Bryan Singer. Though, there’s no telling when this may happen.
Singer, who has directed four of the six mainX-Men movies, believes these mutants can stand tall alongside both Disney’s MCU and Warner Bros.' DCEU, even though the X family hasn’t yet been given a cool abbreviated name. This means the expanded X-Men universe will potentially see a lot of crossovers and tie-ins. As evident in the firstDeadpool movie, which proved to be a blockbuster hit, becoming the highest grossing X-Men movie of all time. Of course 20th Century Fox is going to want to share the character.
But in the recent past, many of those individuals directly responsible for makingDeadpoola success have hinted that Wade Wilson might be just a little too ‘Meta’ to side up againstWolverine, even though that exact thing already happened in the 2009X-Men: Originsspinoff.Bryan SingertoldVarietythis about a possible X-Men andDeadpoolcrossover movie.
“[X-Men is] every bit as large [as DC and Marvel].And now that we’ve altered the timeline [with 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’], there are endless possibilities. If you take a character as irreverent and meta as Deadpool and connect him to something as grounded and serious as X-Men, you have to do it carefully and gently. When you drop them all in together it can be a disaster. That has to be done delicately, but there’s plenty of room to do it.”
Deadpoolhas racked up an unexpected and amazing $760 million at the global box office. And it finally comes home this month on Blu-ray and DVD. The raunchy R-rated superhero movie even earned more domestically thanBatman V Superman. It’s a no brainer thatDeadpoolneeds to be utilized more in the future. Most likely,Deadpoolwill first show up in the plannedX-Forcemovie, which follows a group of paramilitary superheros who embark on dangerous missions.Bryan Singerisn’t only looking to the future in terms of X-Men movies, he also plans to expand this universe on the small screen with upcoming TV shows such asHellfireandLegion. The director says this about widening the mutant universe.
“I think the underbelly [could be explored]. There’s always something interesting about a school that’s got a military aspect beneath its classrooms. Is there another layer to all of that? Is there another layer to the Hellfire Club? The idea of, ‘Who’s running the world?’ - that’s something that was touched upon in ‘First Class’ but has yet to be fully explored. It just has to be explored in a very gentle, methodical way. And I’ve seen it go haywire. I’m not going to be specific where I believe it has. The audience will tell you. But when it’s done right, it all can connect.”
It isn’t known how directlyBryan Singerwill be involved with the impending slate ofX-Menmovies and TV shows. There have been rumors that he plans to leave this world entirely along withHugh Jackman, who has a cameo inX-Men: Apocalypsebefore his final performance as Logan inWolverine 3next year. Though, the director sounds too invested in what he’s helped create to fully let it all slip from his grasp.
“When you spend nearly two decades in a universe, to simply say, ‘I’m done,’ or, ‘I’m going to abandon it,’ just wouldn’t make sense to me. I’m very connected to this universe and a lot of these actors, and also the characters, whomever plays them. So never say never.”
Along with the two planned small screen spinoffs, the nextX-Menmovie afterApocalypsewill beWolverine 3, which arrives August 13, 2025. It will be followed by the spinoffGambitstarring Channing Tatum, which was originally slated for release this October but has been pushed to an undetermined date. The New MutantsandX-Forcemovies are also swiftly moving forward, though no confirmed dates have been announced yet. And we will getDeadpool 2in the next couple of years, which will first introduceCablebefore he becomes the lead inX-Force. There is no telling whether or not a trueDeadpool Vs The X-Mencrossover movie will be announced in the next year or two. AFantastic Four Meets the X-Mencrossover was being discussed before theFantastic Fourreboot proved to be a massive bomb. At this time, the studio has not announced how it plans to move forward withThe Fantastic Fourfranchise.
