One of the most famousSupermancomic book storylines ever is getting the animated movie treatment from Warner Bros., and now we have our first look at their upcoming adaptation ofDeath of Superman. DC Comics did the unthinkable in 1992 and killed Superman and, even though it wasn’t permanent, the event was a huge deal that remains one of the most important storylines for the character ever. Now, a video online gives us a look at the newDeath of Supermananimated movie, which looks quite promising.
This isn’t a trailer really. Rather, it’s a look at a few finished scenes fromThe Death of Superman, along with commentary from co-director Jake Castorena, voice director Wes Gleason and supervising producer James Tucker. “His plight at the start of the movie is whether or not toshare his life further with Lois,” says Tucker. It turns out this movie is going to be a much deeper look at the Superman, the character, and not just a flashy exploration of his death. Castorena had this to say about it.
“He’s got this identity crisis going on. Do I stay human? Do I be the hero? Do I let Lois in?”
The Death of Supermanwas previously adapted in the world of animation in 2007 inSuperman: Doomsday. However, that was much more of an action-packed take on the material and, as James Tucker explains, “This movie is actually the first act of what the first original movie was,” As for the footage? If you’ve seen ananimated DC moviein recent years, this very much looks to be up to that same standard, in terms of quality. While much of the currentlive-action DC universehas left something to be desired for many fans, these animated DC adaptations regularly deliver the goods.
Speaking of the live-action DC universe, Zack Snyder, in part, adaptedThe Death of Supermanstoryline inBatman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. He also paid off the second part of that arc with Superman’s resurrection inJustice League, but the Man of Steel didn’t end up rocking the famous black suit or his jet-black mullet. Though,the suit did at least appear in a deleted scene. Point being, Snyder’s live-action take on this particular storyline didn’t satisfy many DC fans, but the DCEU has been divisive, above all else. Maybe if this animated version of the story gets a sequel where Superman is resurrected we’ll get to see that happen in another way.
Warner Bros. has assembled a rather impressive voice cast for this movie, with Jerry O’Connell leading the way as Superman.The Death of Superman, which doesn’t currently have a release date, also featuresRosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Rebecca Romijn as Lois Lane, Rainn Wilson as Lex Luthor, Shemar Moore as Cyborg, Christopher Gorham as Flash, Jason O’Mara as Batman and Matt Lanter as Aquaman.
