Everyone keeps expectedvideo game moviesto take off the waysuperhero movieshave, but that just hasn’t happened yet, with most being critically derided and not very well received by fans. Hollywood is hoping to change that with two big2016 releases,WarcraftandAssassin’s Creed. If they are as successful as expected, more will surely follow. Including a movie based on the popularDeus Exfranchise. Square Enix, publisher of the title, arrived at E3 2015 with, not news of the movie, but news of an announcement for the movie. Yes, according to producer Adrian Askarieh, we’ll definitely know more about theDeus Exmovie sometime this summer.
Thenew video gamesequelDeus Ex: Mankind Dividedwas being showcased at E3. It is a follow-up to Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a title in the franchise that became so popular, it rejuvenated the series and was set up as a movie at CBS Films. Development started in 2012, with a director and writer attached fairly quickly. But that changed, and we’ve heard very little about the project since that time.Screenrantcaught up with Adrian Askarieh to find out if there is any movement on the big screen adaptation. Surprisingly, yes, there is. About CBS dropping the movie, he explains.
““Roy Lee and I have parted ways with CBS Films and will shortly announce a new home for it. By the way, we love CBS Films. They were very good to us and they were very good to the project. But the budget of the movie is not something that fits the current CBS Films' model. They may still be a part of it in terms of co-financing scenario. We are working extremely closely with Square Enix and Eidos Montreal on this one. Deus Ex is one of the most exciting projects which Roy and myself are working on. Fans should expect a very big announcement soon.”
Back in 2012, Deus Ex: Human Revolution had attached directorScott Derricksonand writerC. Robert Cargill, the team responsible forSinister. Their take was to make Deus Ex: Human Revolution a realistic cyberpunk movie. ButScott Derricksondropped out once he landed theDoctor Strangedirecting job.C. Robert Cargilleventually left the project, and was replaced by new writerMichael Finch, best known for 2010’sPredators. It isn’t know if a new director has been found yet. And just when we’ll here more about Deus Ex: Human Revolution is anybody’s guess. Though it will be before September, according to Adrian Askarieh.
“I can’t give you the time frame on that, but I would certainly hope that it would come this Summer.”
Adrian Askarieh is the producer behind another Square Enix game adaptation hitting screens this sumer,Hitman: Agent 47. He’s also producingJonny Quest, which recently landed directorRobert Rodriguez. The producer claims that the Deus Ex: Human Revolution movie will stick pretty close to the original video game storyline, and will still follow the game’s main hero Adam Jensen. And if the movie does well, the sequel will be based on the newDeus Ex: Mankind Dividedgame. The movie is said to include the same weaponized augmentations that allow Jensen his offensive and stealth abilities.
“Absolutley, but in a way that Christopher Nolan brought everything that was iconic about Batman to Batman Begins, including all of his gear and the Batmobile. We’re very excited about Adam’s and other characters' augmentations and the technology that’s been implanted in Adam. I think that’s something that it’s going to be a lot of fun working with a director and the costume designer and the VFX people to try to bring to cinematic life.”
