Every week, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) hands out new ratings for their upcoming movies. While most of the time, MPAA ratings aren’t necessarily big news, they can be when it comes tosuperhero movieslikeDoctor Strange. Over the weekend, directorScott Derricksonunveiled the movie’s rating, supposedly before the MPAA made it official.

On Friday night, directorScott Derricksonposted an unusual message on Twitter, revealing thatDoctor Strangewas rated PG-13 for “kaleidoscopic galactic intensity and other dimensional psychotropic violence.” The MPAA normally includes a brief explanation for each rating, but it doesn’t seem likely that this would represent their stance on the movie, especially since they haven’t confirmed the rating yet. Still, the news that this MCU movie is PG-13 shouldn’t be too surprising, especially since every MCU movie has been PG-13.

The director’s tweet was also posted in quite the unusual manner, entirely upside down, adding to the “psychotropic” nature of this movie. Marvel’s Phase Three adventureDoctor Strangefollows the story of the talented neurosurgeon DoctorStephen Strangewho, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village,Doctor Strangemust act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect theMarvel Cinematic Universe.
