Earlier this month, we reported that actressRachel McAdamsis being eyed for thefemale leadinMarvel’sDoctor Strange. Naturally, there were no details given about what character she may be playing in that report, but some cryptic comments from earlier today could offer a hint at who she’s playing: the Night Nurse. When asked if there have been any conflicts with theMarvelmovie side,Marvel’s DaredevilproducerSteven S. DeKnightrevealed thatRosario Dawson’s character was changed from Linda Carter to Claire Temple, because the MCU had “plans” for Carter.
“The feature side had plans for her down the road so that was the only time we ran into a conflict. So we just used another name.”
WhileSteven S. DeKnightdoesn’t mentionDoctor Strangespecifically by name, Linda Carter does have a connection to the character in the comics. TheNight Nurseoriginally had her owncomic bookseries in the 1970s, but she was re-introduced inBrian Bendis' run ofDaredevilcomics in 2004. Linda Carter was then brought over toBrian K. Vaughan’s 2006 comic miniseries entitledDoctor Strange: The Oath. It’s worth noting that the first issue of that series will be reprinted over the Halloween season.
Rachel McAdamsconfirmed toThe Los Angeles Timesearlier this week that she is in talks withMarvel, but it’s still, “super-early days,” and she doesn’t “know where that’s gonna go, if anywhere at all.” She didn’t confirm which character she is in talks for, but it’s certainly possible that she could be playing Linda Carter. If she does sign on, the actress will join a cast that includesBenedict Cumberbatchas the title character, Dr. Stephen Strange,Tilda Swintonas the Ancient One andChiwetel Ejioforas Baron Mordo.
Very little is known about the actual story at this point, but producerKevin Feigeconfirmed that the doctor will still live on Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village, just like he did in the comics. There has been some controversy overTilda Swintontaking on the Ancient One role, typically played by a male, but the actress recently revealed that she isn’t sure ifMarvelwants her to portray the Ancient One as a man or woman. The studio reportedly looked at several male actors for the role, before deciding onTilda Swinton.
Rachel McAdamsrecently starred inAlohaandSouthpaw, which opened in theaters this past weekend, and she can be seen on the current season of HBO’sTrue Detective. She will next be seen inThe Little PrinceandEvery Thing Will Be Fine. If she does sign on toDoctor Strange, do you think she would be a good fit to play Linda Carter, a.k.a. The Night Nurse? Or would she be better suited to playing a different character? Let us know what you think.
