Kim Cattrall’s reprisal of Samantha Jones came as quite a surprise when news that Cattrall would appear in the upcoming season ofAnd Just Like That…made headlines last week. For years, the actress has publicly voiced her disinterest in returning to theSex and the Cityfranchise. While Samantha was “present” via text message during the SATC sequel series' first season, season two will feature the actress on-screen while she speaks on the phone to Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah-Jessica Parker).
In a recent conversation withPEOPLEduring the Ed Asner & Friends Celebrity Poker Night, Evan Handler, who has portrayed Harry Goldenblatt since the fifth season of Sex and the City, shared information about Cattrall’s cameo:

“I think it is great. I do. Apparently, [her cameo] was shot in the garage somewhere with no contact with anybody, so the only place I have to welcome her is into my living room when it airs on television.”
While it is unknown which cast members knew (if any) of Cattrall’s return, Handler said he learned the news when audiences did. According toElle, Cattrall’s participation in the series had two stipulations: she would not act with any of the core cast or see director and writer Michael Patrick King.
Cattrall’s anticipated return will occur during the season two finale of AJLT. Season two premieres June 22. John Corbett also joins the sequel series as Aiden, Carrie’s former fiancé.

What Happened to Samantha Jones?
Cattrall starred as the iconic Samantha Jones through all six seasons of HBO’sSex and the City, from 1998 to 2004. She received two Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Golden Globe Award for portraying the confident, sex-positive and outspoken Samantha. Cattrall later joined Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis in the follow-up filmsSex and the CityandSex and the City 2.The sequel seriesAnd Just Like That…premiered on HBO in December 2021, and audiences quickly learned that Samantha had relocated to London following a falling out with the group.
Last year,Parker shared her feelingson whether she’d like to see Cattrall reprise the role of Samantha:
“I don’t think I would, because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared. Samantha’s not gone. Samantha’s present, and I think was handled with such respect and elegance. She wasn’t villainized. She was a human being who had feelings about a relationship, so I think we found a way to address it which was necessary and important for people that loved her.”
In a past interview withVariety, Cattrall also discussed a possible return. She told the publication that she had never been asked to participate inAnd Just Like That… When questioned if she would return, the actress said, “That’s a no. It’s powerful to say no.”
Despite past comments and the reported feud between Cattrall and Parker, fan favorite Samantha Jones will soon grace the screen again.
