As the holiday season approaches and the weather gets colder, many will want to stay home and watch a movie from the comfort of their home. Thankfully, there are some options available fromDisney+. While the platform won’t offer the numerous films likely to be available on other streaming services, the upcoming month for Disney+ looks promising.
Even though Disney+ has alimited number of moviesset for release on the streaming platform, what they offer will likely entertain anyone. From a blockbuster film to a documentary, as well as three holiday specials, there’s something new throughout the entire month of December. Whether audiences want to learn about John Chau and his journey as a missionary or just want to be entertained by an upbeat holiday special, Disney+ has something worth exploring.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

The fifth installment in theIndiana Jonesfranchise,Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, hit theaters over the summer and will be the first movie coming to Disney+ next month. Thefilm follows Indiana Jones(Harrison Ford) on yet another adventure as he tries to track down Archimedes Dial.
Also known as the Antikythera, or the dial of destiny, the ancient device was built in 213 BC by Archimedes and believed by many to possess the ability to detect fissures in time, which is just a fancier way to describe time travel. Following the death of Archimedes, the dial was split in two to prevent the device from falling into the wrong hands. Upon encountering his goddaughter, Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), after nearly two decades, Indy is compelled to find both pieces before the Nazis do.

The Mission

A National Geographic documentary,The Missionfollows American Christian missionary John Chau, who was killed in 2018 after he tried to contact and convert the Sentinelese, one of the world’s last indigenous populations uncontacted by the outside world. The documentary will explore the outdated concepts of exploration and the beliefs that shaped Chau,the evangelical communitythat urged such a quest, the heartbreak of his own father, and the continuing repercussions of such a complex story.
The film will use archival footage of Chau’s expedition to North Sentinel, his own diaries, and exclusive interviews to craft its narrative. In what garnered polarizing reactions from the public as well as his own family, the documentary will reveal a deeper understanding of Chau, who was described as someone with an adventurous spirit and a deep obsession to convert the Sentinelese people.

CMA Country Christmas Special

Airing live on ABC on Dec. 14 at 8 p.m./7 p.m. CST, theCMA Country Christmas Specialwill be available to stream on Disney+ the following day. Hosted by Amy Grant and Trisha Yearwood, the 14th annual special will ring inthe holiday seasonwith plenty of festive classics and musical performances from some of America’s top Country Music stars.
Performers include Jordan Davis, Amy Grant, Lady A, Ashley McBryde, Jon Pardi, Lindsey Stirling, The War and Treaty, Zach Williams, Lainey Wilson, and Trisha Yearwood. Filmed in Nashville, Tennessee, in front of a live studio audience, the yearly celebration is sure to delight fans as Christmas Day quickly approaches.

Doctor Who Holiday Special: The Church on Ruby Road

The 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, will debut in the upcoming holiday special set to air on Disney+ on Christmas Day.Doctor Who Holiday Special: The Church on Ruby Roadwill also see the introduction ofthe Doctor’s newest companion, Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson. A much-loved tradition since the show’s revival in 2005, its holiday specials haven’t aired on Christmas Day since 2017.
While most holiday specials have taken place outside the main story arc told throughout the show’s seasons, its return this year will likely set the stage for the upcoming season set to premiere next year. Given that it’s the first time audiences will see the new Doctor and his companion begin their adventures, it will surely be one worth watching.
