Fox managed to accomplish something surprising last year when it broughtThe Exorcistto TV. Not only did it not tick off fans, but the show managed to actually connect to the mythology of the original movie. Which issacred ground for horror fans. As we head intoThe Exorcistseason 2, creator Jeremy Slater has revealed that the show is looking to take something from less sacred ground, but something that fans love nonetheless. According to Slater, the show’s next season will be directly influenced byThe Exorcist 3.
Jeremy Slater recently spoke withThe Hollywood ReporteraboutThe Exorcistseason 2 and the influences that will be used. He revealed that they are going to try and work one of the bestjump scaresin the history of cinema, something fromThe Exorcist IIIthat fans know very well, intoThe Exorcistseason 2. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“There’s a moment fromThe Exorcist IIIthat every horror fan knows and loves. We’re looking into how we can get that moment in our show this year. It involves a hospital. It’s the single best jump scare in horror movie history aside from Ben Gardner’s head coming out of the boat in Jaws. Also, I love the idea of ademonic serial killer. We’re not exactly doing the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif) this year with the new demon. But, I think you are going to see that this demon has a pattern and a methodology. It’s a boogeyman throughout history that has claimed a lot of notches on its belt. It’s nowhere closer to being finished.”
Much in the way thatThe Exorcistseason 1 connected to the first movie, it sounds like Jeremy Slater is hoping to find a way to connect this season toThe Exorcist III. Warning: possible spoilers ahead. The moment in question comes in the third movie when a nurse meets her demise at the hands of some huge shears. It is hard to do the moment any justice with words alone, but if you haven’t seen it,The Exorcist IIIis worth a watch for this one moment alone.
William Friedkin’s masterpieceThe Exorcisthas had some famously terrible sequels.Exorcist II: The Hereticwas nothing shy of a disaster and both prequels,Exorcist: The BeginningandDominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, both did their best to tarnish the franchise as well. That said,The Exorcist IIIis easily the best of the sequels, featuring Brad Dourif, the man behind the voice of Chucky in theChild’s Playfranchise, as ademonic killer. He turns in a truly great performance in a somewhat uneven but not totally unworthy movie.
That said, fans had some reasonable hesitation when it was announced thatThe Exorcistwas coming to TV. But Jeremy Slater has managed to make it a success and if he can somehow bring the mythology ofThe Exorcist IIIintoThe Exorcistseason 2 successfully, this could be something to really look forward to.The Exorcistseason 2 is set to air on September 29 on Fox.
