Back in January, a rumor surfacedthat 20th Century Fox was unhappy with how directorJosh Trank’sFantastic Fourturned out, and the studio was demanding reshoots under a different director. Of course, those rumors were never confirmed, but reshoots are taking place right now in Baton Rogue, Louisiana, and starTim Blake Nelsonconfirmed in a recent interview thatJosh Trankis still at the helm. When asked about his thoughts on the movie,Tim Blake Nelsonexplained thatJosh Trankessentially shot it like a character-driven indie movie, in the same vein as his first film,Chronicle.
“I would say what I loved about working onFantastic Fouris that even though it’s a superhero movie somehowJosh Trankwas given enough space to make the experience of shooting it often feel like we were doing a character-driven indie film. I never felt like I was acting in big set piece action scenes even when I was. There was always a human underpinning. And now I’ve seen the trailer and it looks like an enormously entertaining superhero movie, so you get the best of both worlds.”
When asked if the reshoots were happening to make the movie larger in scale,Tim Blake Nelsonwouldn’t confirm or deny that claim. But he did say that it probably won’t be a “wild departure” from whatJosh Trankand writerSimon Kinberghad originally envisioned.
“I have no idea, but they’re written bySimon Kinbergand they’re being directed byJosh, and these are two very strong-willed, opinionated people, so I can’t imagine there’s gonna be some wild departure from what they had in mind when they first set out to collaborate. I think it’s probably going to be an effort to underscore what the movie is all about. AndJoshis the maker ofChronicle! This guy is not afraid to take his own perspective on what it is to be a young, eccentric person in a normalizing world and explore that, and that’s whatFantastic Fouris all about, just likeChroniclewas.”
It isn’t known how long reshoots will take place for, butFantastic Fouris still scheduled to hit theaters on August 7. After watching the first trailer, are you more confident that this can be one of this summer’s big hits? Or do you think it didn’t need to be rebooted in the first place?
