Back in late March, a few daysbeforeFurious 7opened in theaters, franchise starVin Dieselrevealed that this sequel starts a new trilgoy, and that they already have plans forFast & Furious 8, which will be set in New York City. AfterFurious 7broke box office records by becoming the fastest movie to make $1 billion at the box office worldwide, we knewFast & Furious 8was surely coming, although Universal has yet to make any sort of official announcement. ProducerNeal H. Moritzspoke toColliderat CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, and asked when fans might be hearing any updates onFast & Furious 8, he teased that an announcement may be coming soon. But the filmmakers are still taking in the overwhelming success ofFurious 7at the moment.

“If that’s going to happen, it’s going to be soon. Well, we’re definitely talking about it, but we’ve also kind of all said to ourselves, ‘Let’s relish this moment ofFurious 7. Let’s relish it, and there will be plenty of time to talk about Fast 8.”

James Wantook the helm forFurious 7, replacing longtime franchise directorJustin Lin. We know thatJames Wanis returning to his horror roots for his next project,The Conjuring 2, which starts production this fall. When asked ifJames Wancould return forFast & Furious 8,Neal H. Moritzsaid they “don’t know yet,” so it’s possible that another director could take over. Don’t expect that filmmaker to beJustin Lin, though, since he has already committed to directingStar Trek 3for Paramount.

Vin Dieselteased back in March thatFurious 7starKurt Russellmay return as Mr. Nobody inFast & Furious 8, but no cast members have been confirmed, and it isn’t even known if a script is being worked on at this time.Chris Morganwrote the scripts for the last five movies (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,Fast & Furious,Fast Five,Fast & Furious 6andFurious 7), but he is currently working on the Universal Pictures shared monster universe withAlex Kurtzman, and it isn’t known if he will even be available to writeFast & Furious 8.
