Back in February, we reported thatGravityco-writerJonas Cuaronhad come aboard to write and direct a newZorroreboot, simply titledZ, which will be produced by Lantica Media and Sobini Films. Today, we have word that the filmmaker has found his leading man inGael Garcia Bernal, who starred in the director’s new filmDesierto, slated for release sometime later this year. Production onZis being eyed to start this fall at Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios.

Deadlinereports that the project will be financed by Lantica Media and sold to international distributors by Pantelion Films at the upcoming Cannes film market. While no specific details were given, this report reveals that the story is set in thenear futureand offers a re-imagined take on the iconic character. Here’s what producerMark Aminhad to say about the casting in a statement.

“I have always loved Gael for this role.Zorrois a hero who is charming, witty and clever.Gaelpossesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce theZorrocharacter to a new audience.”

Mark Aminwill produce through his Sobini Films company, withCami Winikoffserving as an executive producer. It isn’t known if a release date has been targeted quite yet. The project has beenin developmentfor a number of years, initially titledZorro Reborn, with pre-visualization specialistRpin Suwannathset to make his directing debut way back in 2011.Gael Garcia Bernalwas actually in talks to star in 2012, when the reboot was set up at 20th Century Fox. But that incarnation of the swashbuckling adventure never got off the ground.

Gael Garcia Bernalmost recently starred in the Amazon Studios seriesMozart in the Jungle, along with the upcomingDesierto. He also stars in the upcoming releasesNerudaandSalt and Fire, with later of which has a cast that also includesMichael ShannonandWerner Herzog.
