For manyStar Warsfans,Rogue One: A Star Wars Storyis the best movie of the entire sci-fi franchise. However, that is an opinion that directorGareth Edwardsdoesn’t quite agree with, even if he does appreciate the sentiment.Rogue Oneis a movie that tells a self-contained story while being part of the widerStar Warstimeline, and it was one of the first movies to strip away many of the fantastic elements and deliver a strong, character-driven tale. For Edwards, though, it is not the bestStar Warshas to offer.
Rogue One was a unique movie in the Star Wars franchisewhen it was released in 2016, not being a film explicitly linked to a Skywalker, and not having the same bright and spectacular air of the prequel trilogy. Instead, the movie created a more grounded, more mature entry than pretty much anything that came before or after it – at least untilAndor. But, for all its popularity and praise – the movie holds respective 84% and 87% scores on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and audiences – Edwards really does not believe that his movie is quite as good as people keep telling him. He toldCinemaBlend:

“I don’t agree with it, but I appreciate it. I’m very grateful that people say nice things.”
Director of the Best ‘Star Wars’ Movie Addresses His Chances of Returning to the Franchise
The ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ director talks about the possibility of returning to the world of ‘Star Wars.’
WhileRogue Onereceived very little pushback, Edwards has seen some of his other movies receive plenty of criticism – even the likes ofGodzilla, which instigated the mighty MonsterVerse was not immune to plenty of complaints. However, the director has a certain way of looking at such discourse:

“What you have to keep in your pocket as you go through making other films is that it’s not about how people feel the day it gets released, it’s how people feel about it 10, 20 years from now. When you make a movie, you’re living at least a year from now, you’re trying to imagine what it’s like, all these decisions you’re making, what they are going to be like a year from now when this movie is released, what’s the audience going to think? And as the movie comes out, you go, ‘I’m going to pretend I’m living 10 years from now, and it doesn’t matter what people say in the moment.’ It’s the kid who comes up to you 20 years from now and goes, ‘Oh my god, I loved that movie!’ I think that’s the reward.”
‘Rogue One’ Stands as One of the Best ‘Star Wars’ Movies, Regardless
Although Gareth Edwards may not think that his entry in theStar Warssaga is the best of the lot – and that is an opinion that plenty of original trilogy fans will agree with – it is arguably near the top of the franchise. The movie was a complete breath of fresh air following the release of the divisive prequels, and helped to reinvigorate the saga with a new vision and strongly plotted tale to tell.
WhileEdwards doesn’t believe he will be returning to theStar Warsfranchisefor another movie, he is currently looking to revamp theJurassic Worldfranchise withJurassic World Rebirth. The latest entry in the dinosaur saga is now in cinemas, and brings with it a belief that just likeRogue One, Edwards style strips away several issues that have plagued recent movies and could set the franchise up for another big box office win.
