ThePirates of the Caribbeanfranchise is coming back to screens – like anyone would believe otherwise. While there are currently questions overwhether it will be with Johnny Depp, Margot Robbie, or someone completely differentat the helm, one original star would be more than happy to make a small appearance – and even has his own hilarious pitch as to how it could happen. While speaking exclusively to MovieWeb’s George Edelman while promoting his new movieThe Rule of Jenny Pen, the legendaryGeoffrey Rushaddressed a possible swashbuckling return as ne’er-do-well pirate Barbossa. He said:

“I had a good time on that over a very long period. It was probably 12, 15 years or something, from beginning to end. But after the final chapter, I’ve died twice, and I didn’t want an exhumation. I thought it would have been wrong having sacrificed his life for his own child, yeah, and I thought, That’s cheesy. And then I went, you know… if Johnny [Depp] does it…

Treasure Island (1990)

I have had conversations with Jerry [Bruckheimer] saying, you know, [Barbossa] could come back like Hamlet’s father as a ghost. I said, there’s dramatic possibilities in that, but also comedic ones. He just comes back for a couple of scenes to annoy the sh*t out of Jack. And that would be a sort of cherry, that would be a button on the whole storyline, because he worked for the king. He became ridiculously wealthy. He got everything, you know, the curse was broken. The Aztec gold was all there. So, yeah, to be able to just come back and annoy Jack and claim narcissistic superpowers over him.”

Disney Is Remaking a Classic Pirate Movie, and It’s Not ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’

Filmmaking duo Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz are teaming up with Disney for an “Australian surfer” take on a 75-year-old adventure classic.

Geoffrey Rush Believes Johnny Depp Is the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Franchise

Rush has spoken about thePirates of the Caribbeanfranchise before and made a point that any new movie should have Johnny Depp back as Jack Sparrow. During an interview withColliderlast summer, the actor shared his belief that Depp is “irreplaceable” in the saga.

“Whoever takes over from Johnny, I don’t know what’s gonna happen there. He’s irreplaceable. Jack Sparrow is the new Robert Newton [who portrayed Long John Silver in ‘Treasure Island’]. Early on, we had a chat between Orlando [Bloom] and Johnny and myself, and he was already talking about pop stars like Keith Richards having that kind of visceral identity that you knew. He said, ‘I’m just fascinated that this character, Jack, spends half his life on land and half his life on water. What if he never really gets his sea legs?’

Pirates of the Caribbean Jack Sparrow still shot

And that’s where that whole war came from. Michael Chekhov, who was a Russian actor, wrote books about the defining moments of creating characters, and people studied that for decades… but I know people like Anthony Hopkins and Jack Nicholson always said, ‘Oh, we all read about Michael Chekhov.’ I went, ‘That was Johnny’s brilliant instinct.’ It’s a whole picture.”

With twoPiratesmovies currently in development, the question of which one will set sail is a quandary that we still seem a little way from finding out. Although many fans would want to see Depp swaggering along the plank one more time, others believe it is time for the franchise to change course for a different destination.
