Things are getting ready to heat up onMarvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., because Ghost Rider is coming back! The character was last seen on theAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.season 4 winter finale and now he is returning for at least one more episode. Ghost Rider, akaRobbie Reyes, will be back for theAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.season 4 finale later this month on ABC.
The return of Ghost Rider was first hinted at by theAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Twitteraccount in a not so subtle way, with an update that stated the “Forecast is predicting flamin' hot weather #AgentsofSHIELD.” It was then confirmed by ABC that the character will come back for the season 4 finale, via a newly released synopsis for the episode, titled “World’s End.” Here is the official synopsis for theAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.season 4 finale.
“Ghost Rider returns on the explosive season finale of ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ on ABC.Gabriel LunaGuest Stars as Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider. “World’s End,” With the surprising emergence ofGhost Rider, Coulson and the team attempt to stop Aida from ending the world on the exciting season finale of ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'”
Prior to the debut of Ghost Rider onAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4, the character wasn’t in a particularly great place, at least on screen. The prior live-action take was done by Nicolas Cage inGhost Riderand the much-maligned sequel,Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Marvel Studios reacquired the rights to the character a couple of years ago and, for a chunk of time, didn’t do anything with him. But they decided to bring him to the ABC series and the character was a huge hit. So it makes total sense that he’d return to garner a little more attention for the season 4 finale.
The more popular version of Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, is not who’s been appearing onAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Instead, it is the Robbie Reyes version, who is taken from a newer run in the comics. Despite the fact that he is much less popular in theworld of comics, audiences really took to him on the show and he managed to make a big impact. While not confirmed, during a flashback sequence in an earlierAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.episode this season, it seemed like we got a quick glimpse of Johnny Blaze. Though, it has been made clear that he won’t be coming to the show. So it will be Robbie Reyes when we see Ghost Rider show back up as things start to cool down on this particular episodic run of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Maybe this season finale can help set up Ghost Rider for his own spin-off series? Or at the very least, leave the door open for his return next season. Marvel’sAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.continues this Tuesday with the episode “Farewell, Cruel World!” Gabriel Luna will return as Ghost Rider in the May 16Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.season finale “World’s End,” which airs at 10 P.M. ET.
