Director Gil Kenan, who co-wrote the 2021Ghostbusterslegacy sequelGhostbusters: Afterlifealongside Jason Reitman, has revealed that he is bringing in some new mythology for next year’s chilly sequel,Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Speaking withEmpire, who have also unveiled a new image of Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman coming face-to-face with Paul Rudd’s Gary Grooberson, Kenan declares that we are now leaving the previous movies behind and entering “the post-Gozerian era of theGhostbusterssaga.”

“Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past. But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga, so that means we’re able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology. And that’s thrilling as a storyteller, because there are all-new and terrifying stakes with fresh visual references to draw on.”

Set to be helmed by Kenan, who will once again co-write the script with Reitman,Ghostbusters: Frozen Empiresees the Spengler family decide to leave Summerville, Oklahoma and go back to where it all started: the New York City firehouse.

WhileGhostbusters: Afterlifewas very much influenced by themes from the original movie, particularly the villainous “Gozer the Gozerian,”the sequel will introduce new mythology via an ancient artifact, which unleashes a mysterious and evil force, known as the Death Chill. Meaning that Ghostbusters both new and old must now join forces to protect their home and save the world from a deadly and unpredictable fate that, unknowingly, could affect earth’s history with a second Ice Age.

While the original Ghostbusters do feature inGhostbusters: Afterlife, they are expected to play much more of a role in the sequel. And director Gil Kenan could not believe what he was seeing when filming Peter, Ray, and Winston forFrozen Empire.

“I remember there was a moment halfway through the first morning of directing one of the big scenes where I looked at the monitor, and just caught myself with the biggest grin ever. Finally, it dawned on me that I was calling ‘Action!’ and ‘Cut!’ on some of my very favourite characters in movies, working on a big cinematic scale on something that I really cared about. I attempt to hold on to that feeling. I still have it now, finishing the film.”
