Netflixhas released the first trailer forGLOWseason 2, in addition to announcing when the hit wrestling series will make its return. Your favorite Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are back in the ring Friday, June 29. That makes it almost exactly a year between the release ofGlowseason 1 and season 2. While that’s common practice for most networks, it’s not necessarily always the case with Netflix, as they sometimes go two years between seasons, depending on the situation. In this case, the streaming service didn’t make us wait, so we’re getting more sweet 80s ladies wrestling action this summer.
TheGlowseason 2 video isn’t so much a trailer as it is a music video celebrating theupcoming batch of new episodes. It doesn’t feature any actual new footage from the new season, but it does feature theGlowgirls gearing up to the tune ofManiacfromFlashdance. Since this is ashow set in the 80s, that seems entirely appropriate. Marc Maron’s Sam does bust in to break up the fun at one point, but that adds to the charm. If this video is any indication,Glowseason 2 could be a lot of fun. And there is going to be a lot of hairspray this time around.
Glowseason 2 follows the women as they become local celebrities, confronting the good, the bad, and the ugly realities of their newfound fame. As Ruth (Alison Brie) and Debbie (Betty Gilpin) settle into the day-to-day of making a season of TV together, they confront lingering issues at the heart of their friendship. Sam (Marc Maron) is still Sam, but now he has a teenage daughter living with him and twenty episodes to churn out. The wrestling is harder, the stakes are higher, and the hair is even bigger.
Netflix was quick to renewGlowfor a second season, announcing that the girls were coming back in August of last year. The series was created by Liz Flahive (Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Orange is the New Black) and, though it revolves around the actual syndicatedwomen’s professional wrestling circuit, which ran for four seasons from 1986 to 1989 for a total of 104 episodes, the show largely centers on fictionalizations of the characters who appeared the ring. The series came about as a result of the creators seeing the 2012 documentary,GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Flahive and Mensch also serve as showrunners onGlow.
