With just over a month left before its premiere on theNetflix streaming service, the second trailer has arrived forG.L.O.W.This upcoming series will debut the entire 10-episode first season Friday, June 23.G.L.O.W.is loosely based on the actual 1980s seriesGLOW: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, which was based in Las Vegas and aired for four seasons between 1986 and 1989.
GLOWtells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.
The cast also includes Alex Rich as Florian, Britney Young as Carmen Wade, Britt Baron as Justine, Chris Lowell as Sebastian “Bash” Howard, Ellen Wong as Jenny, Gayle Rankin as Sheila the She Wolf, Jackie Tohn as Melrose, Kate Nash as Rhonda, Kia Stevens as Tammé, Kimmy Gatewood as Stacey,Marc Maronas Sam Sylvia, Rebekka Johnson as Dawn, Sunita Mani as Arthie and Sydelle Noel as Cherry Bang. It hasn’t been confirmed if any of the actual lady wrestlers from the realGLOWwill be appearing in cameo roles, or if they worked behind-the-scenes as consultants. The originalGLOWseries would not run weekly episodes all year around, like the WWE, but instead, the show would air 26 weekly episodes per season for a total of 104 episodes produced throughout the four-year run.GLOWwas brought back in 2001 by the Riviera Hotel & Casino, where the original show was filmed, and it also spawned other female wrestling shows such asPowerful Women of Wrestling,Ladies Sports ClubandWomen of Wrestling, which also had a comeback of its own in 2013.
This series is also the latest to showcase the colorful decade that was the 1980s lately, following in the footsteps of other hit TV shows such as ABC’sThe Goldbergsand Netflix’s ownStranger Things, which returns for its second season on Halloween. There have been rumors of a potential crossover betweenThe GoldbergsandStranger Things, and now withGLOWthrown into the mix, perhaps there could be additional crossover opportunities.
