There has been talk for years aboutGremlins 3, withGremlins/Gremlins 2 star Zach Galligan recently trying to start a fan campaignto drum up interest in this long-awaited follow-up. While there is nothing official to announce yet, originalGremlinswriter Chris Columbus revealing that he’s actively developing a newGremlinsproject, but it won’t be a sequel, it will be a reboot. Here’s what he had to say in a new interview below.
“Gremlinswe are actively talking about that. So that’s what I am working on with my production company 1492 Pictures. It will almost definitely be a reboot.”
After starting his Twitter campaign in January, Zach Galligan teased in February that the iconic Gizmo would return, and he would be back as a puppet and not a CGI character, but there is no word about if Galligan’s ideas will ever be implemented. Unfortunately, Columbus didn’t offer any specifics about his project, and whether or not he’s writing thisGremlinsreboot, or if it’s being developed with other writers.
The filmmaker’s statement is quite different from what he stated in August, when he revealed in an interview that the script was done and that he was really proud of it. He also added how, “twisted and dark” the story is, hinting that this story could involve the death of the belovedGizmo, adding that too many people had died because of Gizmo, which indicated that project was a sequel toGremlinsandGremlins 2. Now that the filmmaker has added that thisGremlinsproject will “almost definitely be a reboot,” it seems that the narrative around this project has shifted from a sequel to a reboot.
There has been talk in the past that a newGremlinswould be a true sequel that would be set 30 years after the original, but with Chris Columbus working on this project at his production company, there is no indication yet how different this reboot will be from the original classic. The originalGremlinsearned an impressive $148.1 million, the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year during its theatrical run in 1984. While the 1989 sequelGremlins 2: The New Batchdidn’t fare quite as well ($41.4 million), it will be interesting to see what elements of these movies will be incorporated in the reboot.
Chris Columbus didn’t give any indication as to whether or not he will also direct theGremlinsreboot as well. The filmmaker only wrote the script for the originalGremlins, which Joe Dante directed, but the writer would go on to be an accomplished director. He last directed 2015’sPixels, and he is attached to write and direct a video game adaptation ofFive Nights at Freddy’s, although there is no indication as to when production may begin on that movie. you may head over toMetro.usto read their full interview with Chris Columbus, and hopefully we’ll hear more on thisGremlinsreboot soon.
