Fans who were at Marvel’s Comic-Con Hall H presentation this summer got to see the first footage fromGuardians of the Galaxy 2, which made the surprising reveal thatKurt Russellis playingEgo the Living Planet, the father ofChris Pratt’s Star-Lord. That footage was never released to the public after SDCC, although a different trailer was released in October. DirectorJames Gunnrecently revealed that the new trailer will be online very soon. While the director didn’t say when exactly the footage would be released, he did tease that not much will be revealed.
The Hollywood Reportercaught up withJames Gunnat a launch party for the trailer to another one of his films, the intense thrillerThe Belko Experiment. When asked which film’s trailer was harder to put together,James Gunnrevealed theGuardians 2was more difficult, since the expectations are so high. Here’s what he had to say below.

“Guardians is the harder one. With Belko, the premise is what people have to buy into. With Guardians, people really go through every single little shot and try to figure out what the movie’s about. And there’s a lot of mysteries inGuardians 2. We were talking about how much to give away - and we’re not going to give away very much.”
Thefirst trailerwas only 90 seconds long, which left many fans waiting for even more footage. It hasn’t been confirmed how long this full trailer will be, but the director reiterated that the trailer forBelko Experimentwas much easier to craft. TheGuardians 2trailer had to be put together much more carefully, since particular shots could give away major plot points.
“You can show all sorts of stuff happening and it doesn’t really give away who lives, who dies, what the outcome is, what the mystery is. WithGuardians, it’s such an emotional and physical journey, going to all these different places. It’s like, ‘God, do I really want to show this planet we go to in the middle of the movie? … Those are always hard choices to make.”
In related news,James Gunnalso took to Facebook to reveal a new alien, played by his friendStephen Blackehart. To celebrate the actor’s birthday today,James Gunndecided to showcase the first photo of his alien character, Brahil, inGuardians of the Galaxy 2. Here’s what the director had to say on Facebook earlier today.
“Happy Birthday to my very best pal in all the land and my only friend who knows both the historical ins-and-outs of the Third Punic War and how an air-conditioner works, Stephen Blackehart. Here he is as Brahl inGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Photo by Steve Agee.”
While discussing these different trailers, the filmmaker also reminisced about the very first trailer to his 2014 blockbusterGuardians of the Galaxy. That footage not only gave fans a first look at these heroes, but also a taste of the wildly popular soundtrack, Awesome Mix Vol. 1. During his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker revealed that version of the trailer almost didn’t see the light of day, thanks to a different trailer testing much better. Here’s what he had to say below.
“That trailer tested not very well. We had another trailer that was very cheesy that sold the movie as something different than what it was - that tested a little better. And at the end of the day, the [marketing] guys were like, ‘This is what the movie is. We are selling what the movie is. Not something else.’ You’ve got to sell the movie for what it is, and that’s what they did. They really bought my trust with that on the first movie.”
