MCU fans weren’t the only ones disappointed withDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, asHayley Atwell, who reprized her role as a variant of Peggy Carter, recently addressed her own frustration with her Ant-Man-sized role in the film. Directed by Sam Raimi,Multiverse of Madnesswas Benedict Cumberbatch’s second solo film in the MCU. One scene saw him travel to an alternate universe run by Marvel’s Illuminati, which included Captain Carter (Atwell), John Krasinski as Reed Richards, andPatrick Stewart as Professor X.

During a recent appearance on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast, Hayley Atwell revealed how disappointed she was to learn her role in the film had been severely cut short. The actress described her scene as “blink and you miss me” because of the very limited screen time. Despite being set up in the scene as a potential savior and part of the team who would take down Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), Captain Carter suffered one of the most unintentionally funny deaths in the MCU. Atwell recalled:

Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter dancing in Avengers: Endgame

“I took umbrage on the fact that she has that brilliant line, ‘I could do this all day,’ then she’s Frisbee’d to death with her own shield, and I’m like, ‘she’s so undermined.’ It just got… pulled out from her. And it’s a kind of… a funny moment.”

We Almost Had a Peggy Carter and Captain America Reunion Movie, and I’m Devastated That It Never Happened

Oh, what could have been for the MCU sweethearts!

The treatment ofCaptain Carter and the Illuminatiis one of the smaller issues withDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as most fans agree the film is a narrative and tonal mess. By bringing in Sam Raimi, fans thought the film would be Marvel’s genuine first attempt at horror. Instead, what we got was Raimi’s vision behind layer after layer of studio decisions, resulting in a mismatch of ideas that acted as a desperate stepping stone to set up future movies.

Hayley Atwell Recalls Her Experience of “Bullying” on ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Set

Much like her character being “frisbee’d” to death at the hands (orwiggly fingers) of Wanda Maximoff,Hayley Atwell also didn’t have the most pleasant time while makingDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The actress recalled having an idea about how her character would enter the scene, and offered it to an unnamed member of the crew. “I just came up with an offering technically, which I love doing, because a lot of directors will go, ‘Oh, great, try something,'” she said. However, the note was met with a Hollywood ego more powerful than Captain Carter’s frisbee. Atwell continued:

“In this particular instance, he went, ‘Oh, sure, Hayley, I’ll just tell our Oscar-winning editor that you have some choices you’d like to make. And, yeah, don’t you worry about that. I’ll make sure he gets a memo.'”

Thankfully, Hayley Atwell’s time in the MCU doesn’t appear to be completely over. The actress is set to return as the underappreciated character in Joe and Anthony Russo’sAvengers: Doomsday. While her name was absent from the long line of chair’s in the film’s recent casting video, a report previously confirmed her role.
