As you likely know by now, givenDeadpool’s massive success at thebox office, this unconventional superhero adventure includes a post-credits scene, an homage toFerris Bueller’s Day Off, where the Merc With the Mouth shows up to confirm that the iconic comic book character Cable will be featured inDeadpool 2. In hindsight, it was quite a bold move, considering that a sequel was not a sure thing. Now that the movie has made more than $757 million worldwide, we know a follow-up is coming. We reported in February thatDeadpoolwritersRhett ReeseandPaul Wernickwere coming back to pen the sequel. During an interview withHitfixfor the Blu-ray and DVD release on May 10,Rhett Reesehad this to say about how Cable will be the perfect “foil” for the Merc, much like how Colossus was in the originalDeadpool.
“There’s a lot of fun in that he’s very serious and he does take on more serious weighty issues thanDeadpool’s used to taking on, so I think there’s a juxtaposition there that can be fun. We had a lot of fun withColossusin the first movie, just by virtue of him being a foil toDeadpool, being a goody two-shoes and a straight shooter andDeadpoolbeing irreverent. And I thinkCableoffers us the opportunity to provide another really cool, different foil forDeadpool.”
Deadpool’s success is unprecedented at the box office, becoming the highest-grossingR-ratedmovie of all time, and the highest-grossingX-Menmovie in the franchise’s storied history. The movie’s success is even more impressive, considering it was filmed on a $58 million budget. It’s standard practice for any sequel to raise the stakes, from a story perspective, which normally leads to a steep budget increase as well. However,Paul Wernickrevealed that they want to keep the same budget, while refusing to up the ante as far as the story is concerned.
“We don’t want to make a $200 million epic superheroDeadpoolmovie. We want to make the $50 millionDeadpoolsequel. And I think people tapped into this being a character piece, you know? This was a movie about a broken character, a broken guy who’s just trying to make his way in the world, and I think we’re gonna continue that moving forward. I think (raising the stakes) goes against who the character is. You know,Deadpoolwants to save himself, he doesn’t want to save the world. You know, he’s not lifting cities up or fighting alien invasions.”
Ryan Reynoldswill certainly be back as the Merc With the Mouth, but aside from Cable’s inclusion into the story, not much else is known aboutDeadpool 2. A rumor surfaced in February that the comic book characterDominocould be introduced in the sequel as a possible love interest for Cable, but this character has not been confirmed yet. It isn’t known how far along the writers are on the script, butRhett Reeseteased that there are plenty of stories from the comics that could be mined for the sequel.
“We’re opening up to some fun choices because we aren’t really constrained as much. We can go almost wherever we want. There’s a massive body of material in the comics. We have our own ideas, Ryan has his ideas, and so much of the fun of writingDeadpoolis the freedom, the freedom to break rules, the freedom to do crazy things, and I think the sequel probably provides even more opportunity than the first movie to do that.”
20th Century Fox hasn’t announced a release date quite yet, although a rumor surfaced last week thatRyan Reynoldshas closed his re-negotiated deal for the sequel, and that filming may begin this fall. If this is the case, it’s possible that the studio could getDeadpool 2in theaters by late 2017 or possibly early 2018, but we’ll have to wait and see.
