After the delightful spell that wasHocus Pocus 2, expectations are high for the next installment of the beloved witchy tale. And it sounds like the magic will continue withHocus Pocus 3. The original 1993 film introduced us to the Sanderson sisters—played by the iconic trio Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. Set in Salem, Massachusetts, these witches have brought both mayhem and charm during Halloween, and the recent 2022 Disney+ sequel continued this enchanting legacy.

Fans were thrilled this past June with the news that thethird installment is under development. WithHocus Pocus 2director Anne Fletcher and screenwriter Jen D’Angelo once again at the helm, there’s no doubt magic will be in abundance. And speaking of D’Angelo, she recently offered insights into the creative process of this next project.

The Sanderson sisters are returning for Hocus Pocus 2 as the witches

In her conversation withEntertainment Weekly, D’Angelo shared her keen interest in the sequel’s growth. With the 2023 writers strike having concluded, the brainstorming forHocus Pocus 3has resumed with zest. While still in the story phase, D’Angelo hinted at the possible return and exploration of Hannah Waddingham’s character, the Mother Witch. This is the mysterious figure who presented the Sanderson sisters with their spellbook. D’Angelo revealed, “We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s Mother Witch.”

“I believe that she’s that mother, that she is the scorpion pie mother, and that they had a much more significant relationship with her than we’ve yet to see. But, maybe we will see.”

D’Angelo further elaborated on the character, suggesting the Mother Witch might be the very one hinted at in the original movie. She stated her belief in the deep connection between the Sanderson sisters and the Mother Witch. Exploring the layers of these relationships seems to be a promising direction, with D’Angelo expressing hopes of delving into both the youthful and adult versions of the sisters. “We’re excited to continue those stories,” she expressed.

“I’m hoping that we are able to explore every aspect of these stories and take these characters on a bunch of fun adventures. 3 is still very much in the early stages, we don’t really know what it is, but we’re exploring all options and I think everybody is so delighted by the reaction that Hocus Pocus 2 got, and we’re excited to continue those stories.”

Hocus Pocus’ Director Expresses Disappointment in Not Being Asked to Helm the Film’s Sequel

Kenny Ortega wasn’t asked to helm Hocus Pocus 2, and the director was disappointed that he wasn’t approached to return.

The Mother Witch’s Enigma: Hannah Waddingham’s Potent Role & Hints for Hocus Pocus 3

Although the term “mother” was subtly used in the inauguralHocus Pocus, the sequel allowed viewers to get a more intimate look. The character, portrayed by the talented Hannah Waddingham—famously known for her role inTed Lasso—appears in the prologue set in 1653. Not only does she gift Winifred with the spellbook, but she also provides guidance on preserving their youth and cautions them on particular spells. Her admiration for theSanderson sisters' bond, symbolizing a potent coven, also becomes evident.

Could the upcoming film follow a dual timeline narrative? Given D’Angelo’s fondness for the actors who portrayed the young Sanderson sisters, it’s a possibility worth considering. The narrative approach would be reminiscent of films likeMamma Mia! Here We Go AgainandThe Godfather Part II. Given the Mother Witch’s significant influence during the sisters' early years, this direction would provide ample material for a deeper dive.

Moreover, the conclusion ofHocus Pocus 2dropped a subtle hint. Although the Mother Witch wasn’t depicted in the present-day narrative, her transformation into a crow was a significant clue, hinting at her enduring presence. If the third installment follows this lead, it could set the stage for the Mother Witch to take on a pivotal role, possibly positioning her both as an ally and a potential adversary to the Sanderson sisters, with their relationship having evolved through time.

All in all, with the glimpse into the potential story arc and character exploration, the third installment promises to be an enchanting ride. Fans and followers of the franchise, buckle up: the magic isn’t over yet.
