Captain America: Civil Warrecently shifted production from Atlanta to Germany, with shooting scheduled to take place through mid-September. One of the actors,Frank Grillo, who playsCrossbones, already wrapped his portion of the production back in late May, before moving on to start production onSeason 2of his DirecTV series Kingdom. While promoting the show at the TCA press tour,Frank Grillooffered an update onCaptain America: Civil War, revealing to/Filmthat it is a very big and physical movie.
“It’s a lot of physical stuff, without giving too much away, but there is a little bit of everything. It’s a big movie. There’s a lot of characters in the film so it’ll be interesting to see what it looks like all cut together. There’s so many people in the movie.”
While production was taking place in Atlanta, we saw set photos featuringFrank Grillowith and without his Crossbones mask, revealing some massive facial scars. These scars were a result of his battle at the end ofCaptain America: The Winter Soldier. When asked specifically about these scars, the actor had this to say.
“The scars are not healed. The scars are terribly bad but the helmet comes off and you get to see that.”
Captain America: Civil Warpicks up whereAvengers: Age of Ultronleft off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) leads the new team ofAvengersin their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain. During a separate interview withCollider,Frank Grillotalked about all of the other actors who showed up just to watch a scene between him andChris Evans.
“It’s just what you would imagine it to be. That’s what we are. Me and [Chris] Evans were doing this scene for days, where we were supposed to be in a certain part of the world and they recreated that world. There were hundreds of extras, and there we were in the center of it.[Robert] Downey Jr.wanted to come down and watch us do the scene. So, at one point, I turn around andDowneyis there and[Jeremy] Rennerwas there andPaul Ruddhad just come down, and they were all watching us do our thing. I was like, ‘Wow, this is special! This is really cool!'”

The actor also spoke about the surprisingly elaborate fitting process he had to undergo just for his Crossbones mask. Here’s what he had to say below.
“There were seven different fittings. I was doing another movie, and they flew out. It was top secret. They came in with briefcases and I was like, ‘Really?! For a helmet?!’ And then, when I went in my trailer and saw it and put it on, it changed my whole DNA. It’s amazing!”
