It had been 19 years between 1989’sIndiana Jones & the Last Crusadeand 2008’sIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and many fans have wondered if it will be that long beforeIndiana Jones 5finally hits theaters. Just one year after Disney acquiredGeorge Lucas' LucasFilm for$4 billionin 2012, the studio also picked up theIndiana Jonesfranchise rights from Paramount, which offered fans hope thatIndiana Jones 5may still see the light of day. Disney CEORobert A. Igerrecently appeared on Bloomberg Go, where he confirmed thatIndiana Jones 5is in fact coming, but, unfortunately, he wouldn’t say when.
“It starts with great storytelling. That’s the heart of the company, going all the way back to 1923 when it was founded byWalt Disneyand his brother Roy. It’s all about storytelling. That’s what creates the most value. We had in Pixar, some of the greatest storytellers that existed in motion pictures, certainly the best in animation. We had in Marvel, stories and characters, great storytelling, and obviously inGeorge Lucas’Star Wars, andIndiana Jones, by the way, as well, which will be coming, we have more great stories.”
This revelation certainly isn’t anything new, since LucasFilm CEOKathleen Kennedyrevealed in May that Disney is planning on making a newIndiana Jonesmovie, but she wasn’t quite sure when that would happen. She added that there isn’t a script in development yet, but they are discussing this sequel. Just a month later, arumorsurfaced that Disney was planning on a 2018 release forIndiana Jones 5, but that was debunked shortly thereafter by producerFrank Marshall.
The producer also squashed speculation that Disney was eyeingChris Prattto take over the franchise fromHarrison Ford. The actor himself said in November that he still does want to make thesequel. It isn’t known ifSteven Spielbergwould come back to direct the sequel, but the actor said that he wanted to work with this celebrated filmmaker once again.
Steven Spielberghimself saidHarrison Fordis the onlyIndiana Jones, but we still don’t seem any closer to getting Indy back on the big screen than we were after the release ofIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Do you want to seeHarrison Forddon the fedora and bullwhip one last time? Or should the franchise be put out to pasture? Take a look atRobert A. Igerfull video interview below, and stay tuned for more onIndiana Jones 5.
