Back in June 2012, a year and a halfbefore he would direct the entire first season of HBO’sTrue Detective,Cary Fukunagasigned on to direct a new adaptation ofStephen King’sITfrom a script he co-wrote withChase PalmerandDavid Kajganich. With production set to begin this summer,Cary Fukunagarevealed new details about the adaptation in an interview with Brazilian newspaperO Globo, where the filmmaker said that he has actually been working on this adaptation for the past five years.
“I’ve been in this project for about five years. I had already read versions of the script but nothing felt right. Everybody tried to put too much into it, telling it from the perspective of the adult and the child in a two hour movie. It didn’t fit. So I decided to throw it all away and start from scratch.”
The book and the 1990 miniseries followed a group of kids known as The Losers Club who, in the 1950s, fought off an evil demon posing as a child-killing clown known as Pennywise. 30 years later, they must join forces once again when Pennywise re-emerges. We reported last year that this adaptation will be split into two movies, with the first focusing on the children, and the second centering on the adults. The director added thatStephen Kingapproved of the changes he and his co-writers made to his original story, with the adaptation to take place in a different timeframe than the original book, and stating that they are still trying to find the “perfect guy” to play Pennywise.
“This will be my first movie in the US and I’m still trying to find the perfect guy to play Pennywise. It’s really good to knowStephen [King]likes what we did. We (Fukunaga and writers David Kajganich and Chase Palmer) changed names, dates (the story is originally set in the 50′s), dynamics, but the spirit is similar to what he’d like to see in cinemas, I think.”
It is believed that the first movie will be set in the 1980s, when the book was originally published, with the second movie set in present day, but that has yet to be confirmed.
