Supermanfans are still rejoicing afterthe trailer forJames Gunn’s upcoming film premiered yesterday. However, some are still complaining about Gunn’s casting ofDavid Corenswetas Clark Kent/Superman. The trailer should have put concerns to rest, but the director’s latest statements will probably help, because apparently,Corenswet’s presence reminded the director of Christopher Reeve, the original Hollywood star who played Superman in Richard Donner’s versions of the superhero franchise.
After the trailer for 2025’s revival ofSupermandropped, there were many questions:Why did Superman bleed? Where’s the missing note of John Williams' signature musical score? Will Krypto, the puppy, have a major role? However, perComicBook’s report, Gunn preferred to expand on how Corenswet reminded him of Christopher Reeve:

“The thing that connects him so much toChristopher Reeveis, he has a lot of deep training. Like, I’ve never worked in my entire life with such a rigorous actor. He challenged me on a daily basis to really get the most out of his character, get the most out of his story. Everything he does in the movie is utterly true. You don’t ever have a moment, even watching dailies, where you go, ‘David did something that feels stupid, that doesn’t feel real, that feels like he’s faking, and he’s phoning it in,’ never. He’s always completely present.”
Corenswet was Gunn’s selection to give life to Superman againafter Jacob Elordi passedon the opportunity. The star of Ryan Murphy shows likeHollywoodandThe Politician, and Ti West’sPearl, was then selected for the role. For Lois Lane, Samara Weaving and Emma Mackey were considered, but ultimately, Mrs. Maisel herself,Rachel Brosnahan, was chosen to portray Superman’s romantic counterpart.

Isn’t It a Little Early for James Gunn To Be Teasing ‘Superman’s Post-Credits Scene?
The trailer for James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ is currently firing up fans on social media, but there’s another tease that’s getting attention.
During the Q&A, Gunn also told a story of when he saw Brosnahan and Corenswet’s audition videos and secretly celebrated that he had his Clark:

“It was sort of miraculous — the funniest thing is, I got both Rachel [Brosnahan] and David’s self tapes on our very first day of casting. So the thing I was the most worried about was casting Superman at the beginning of the process, and after the first day I was like, ‘I think that guy is pretty good.'”
Supermanwill be released on Jul 21, 2025, and it represents a revival for DC Studios’ most important character. The DCEU is dead, and theDCU has just been bornunder Gunn’s leadership. Future projects for the DCU include aSupergirlmovie, but we’d rather not speculate beyond that.

Who Has Been the Best Superman So Far?
So far, a few actors have played the superhero from Planet Krypton. George Reeves in the 1950s, Christopher Reeve in the ’70s and ’80s, Brandon Routh in 2006’sSuperman Returns, Tom Welling inSmallville, and Henry Cavill during the DCEU. Which means Corenswet joins a powerhouse of performers who have each contributed in their own way to building a legacy. But let’s be honest: So far,Christopher Reeve is the top contender for the best Superman of all time.
Hollywood legendChristopher Reeve played Superman until 1987’sSuperman IV: The Quest for Peace, a film that was unfortunately panned by critics. In 1995, he was injured during a horse-riding competition, and was paralyzed from the neck down. In 2004, he died from complications from an infection. Reeve will always be remembered as the actor who soared beyond the stars to the tune of John Williams’ classic score that made us believe a regular journalist could also fly and save the world.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”
