Supermanis crawling closer and closer to its July, 2025 release date. One year ago today, the leading cast ofJames Gunn’s new movie, David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, met for their first screen test. Corenswet takes over from Henry Cavill, whose tenure as the Man of Steel saw a shaky end after yoyoing announcements about his return to the character in the DC Extended Universe’s later projects. Meanwhile, Rachel Brosnahan steps into Amy Adams' former role, after she was criminally underutilized in the past iteration of the DCEU.

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of their screen test, James Gunn took toThreadsand praised the chemistry between the leading pair. Gunn is directingSuperman, the first movie in his revamped DC Universe. In the post, Gunn wrote nothing but praise for Corenswet and Brosnahan, commending their talent, and their work ethic on the new project. Gunn wrote:

“One year ago today David and Rachel screen-tested for Clark and Lois. When they first read together it was like magic. What a wonderful year it’s been with two of the most extraordinary, vibrant, and meticulous actors I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with. I can’t wait for you to see them on screen in just a little over a year.”

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”

A year on from Corenswet and Brosnahan’s first screen test and production is full steam ahead onSuperman. James Gunn (a frequent sharer ofnews and updates through social media) revealed that the project is over halfway through shooting. So far, audiences know little about the new project. A general plot can be deduced from the cast, which sees Nicholas Hoult play Lex Luther, Superman’s most iconic villain. In the first official image, which saw Corenswet’s Superman suiting up, a mysterious villain can be seen decimating Metropolis in the background. The internet iscurrently in a flurry trying to deduce who the villain is.

What Will the New DC Universe Look Like?

The DCEU was kickstarted by Zack Snyder’sMan of Steel. Throughout its run of movies, the franchise saw incredibly mixed reviews from critics and audiences, but kept pushing through on the back of its impressive box office returns. While some smaller characters were introduced, likeBlack Adam(played by Dwayne Johnson), for the most part, the DCEU relied on DC Comics' most popular characters like Superman, Batman, and the wider Justice League.

In true James Gunn fashion, the new DC Universe appears to be taking the cult-classic, and lesser known characters from the comics and pushing them into the spotlight. The Authority,Creature Commandos, andBooster Goldwill be the focus of their own standalone projects. Meanwhile,Peacemaker, and [Amanda]Waller, who have already appeared on screen (Peacemakerin his own self-titled series, and Amanda Waller in both versions ofThe Suicide Squad) and are having their stories continued in standalone projects within the new DC Universe.

That’s not to say the popular characters are being ignored. AlongsideSuperman,The Brave and the Boldwill see another iteration of Batman, this time with his son, Damien Wayne. TheTeen Titanswill also be coming to the big screen, as willSwamp Thing. On the small screen,Lanternswill have the tall taskof redeeming the atrocious Ryan Reynolds 2011Green Lanternmovie.

Supermanreleases in theaters on July 04, 2025.
