Star Trek: Discoveryhas really been coming together, despite a couple of setbacks that have prevented the show from debuting as early as CBS originally wanted. But a major piece of the puzzle, arguably the most important piece when it comes to aStar Trekproject, has just been put into place. It looks like formerHarry PotterstarJason Isaacshas been tapped to play the new captain inStar Trek Discovery.
According to a report fromDeadline,Jason Isaacswill be joining up with Starfleet as the captain of the USS Discovery. His character will be named Captain Lorca and he will have some big shoes to fill with his new role inStar Trek: Discovery. Other actors who have played captains inStar Trekshows include most famouslyWilliam ShatnerandPatrick Stewart, butAvery Brooks,Kate MulgrewandScott Bakulahave all also commanded their own Starfleet ships. In recent years,Jason Isaacshas been working on slightly smaller projects when compared toHarry Potter, such asThe InfiltratorandA Cure for Wellness. He also worked on the first season ofStar Wars Rebels, providing the voice for The Inquisitor as well as appearing on the Netflix seriesThe OA.
While the actorJason Isaacswill surely be taking some cues from the captains that came before him, but with howStar Trek: Discoveryfits into the timeline, Captain Lorca will actually be influencing a lot in terms of the history the franchise. For those who may not know, this new show will be taking place roughly ten years before the events ofStar Trek: The Original Series. That means even though Captain Kirk was the first Starfleet captain we ever became familiar with in pop culture, Captain Lorca preceded him. This show will also be taking place outside of the “Kelvin Timeline” that the current movies take place in.
Jason Isaacsis joining a very stacked cast that is already in place forStar Trek: Discovery. The rest of the cast includesDoug Jones,Sonequa Martin-Green,Maulik Pancholy,Anthony Rapp,Terry Serpico,Michelle Yeoh,Mary Chieffo,Shazad LatifandChris Obi. Originally the show was going to beBryan Fullerserving as showrunner for the series, but he had to step away due to his commitments withAmerican Godsand other projects. Though, he is still serving as an Executive Producer on the series.
Star Trek: Discoverydoes not yet have an exact premiere date, but it is expected to debut in late summer or early fall. The show will air its first episode on CBS, but the series will live on the network’s streaming service CBS All Access.Star Trek: Discoveryseason 1 will consist of 13 episodes and while we can’t say exactly when we will be able return to the world ofStar Trekon TV, we do know that a solid actor has been put in place as the captain of the USS Discovery and that should be encouraging to eager fans.
