John Krasinski says thatA Quiet Place 2won’t be a typical sequel.A Quiet Placecame out of nowhere to become a huge hit at the box office and received near-universal critical acclaim in the process, with many hailing it as one of the best movies of 2018. Krasinski, who wrote and directed the unconventional horror movie, knew that the studio was going to ask for a sequel, but he wasn’t interested at the time. He gave them his blessing to continue on without him. However, he later changed his mind with the help of his wife Emily Blunt.
As for returning to makeA Quiet Place 2,John Krasinskitook a while before he decided to hop back on board. After giving the studio his permission, they started to ask him questions about how he would approach making the sequel if he were still involved. Krasinski started to think of ideas that would be respectful to the first installment as well as the audience who will be paying to see the new movie. After the studio asked for more ideas, Krasinski started to get sucked into the project.
After writing his ideas for the studio to hand over to potential filmmakers, John Krasinski offered to come back forA Quiet Place 2. In a new interview, the writer/director/actor went into detail about how the sequel will be different from other sequels, and it sounds like it could be radically different. Krasinski had this to say about his approach forA Quiet Place 2.
“Why I had this little idea that’s now gotten bigger is most sequels are about a villain returning or a hero returning, and you have to build this entire world around just the idea that I have a hero or a villain. That’s a lot, and I think that’s where a lot of sequels go wrong because as much as you love that hero or villain, the entire thing is fabricated just to make that person work.With A Quiet Place 2, we have the world. So it’s actually the world that’s built, it’s the idea that the rest of the world is going through this exact same experience. Are there other people that have to survive like this? It’s that idea of living through the set of circumstances, not again in the same way obviously, but exploring it more. You only got to do it intimately for a small amount of time, so what happens next?”
As John Krasinski started to explore more ideas forA Quiet Place 2, he started to get more excited about what the project can be and thinking about the different parameters that he has to work within. Now, Krasinski says that it’s not a sequel, which is similar to what Patty Jenkins said about working onWonder Woman 1984. But, it’s beginning to sound like Krasinski might explore the world ofA Quiet Placewithout revisiting the same characters. He explains.
“That’s why I got really excited, because for me certainly the most fun I’ve ever had in my career as a writer was writing this, because I got to play in the most exciting world. It was actually Emily, of course, who articulated it better than me. She said the same thing, it was like, No way, don’t do a second one, and then I pitched her my idea and she was like, So you’re definitely doing that. She said, Butit’s not a sequel. It’s the second book in a series, she said, It sounds (like) semantics but it’s true, it really is-you’re not doing anything that’s like, alright I’m gonna take all the things you love and just kinda repeat them but in a different way. It’s not A Quieter Place, it’s sort of an exploration of getting to live in the circumstances, and that’s really fun.”
John Krasinski is going to keep hisA Quiet Place 2plans to himself for now, but it’s cool to seehow excited he is to be working on itafter not wanting to have anything to do with it. In the end, it’s going to be exciting to see what he came up with that makes this sequel different from the traditional idea of a second movie.
