Johnny Deppis slowly making his way back into Hollywood, but images from the set of his latest film, the action crime movieDay Drinker, has given a first look at the unrecognizable former heartthrob sporting a scruffy beard and long greying hair. However, it is all for the character he is playing, and the beard is not a permanent fixture that those who still follow Depp’s every move need to worry about.

Day Drinkerwill be the first major studio movie to star Depp since his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. While Heard has settled herself into a life away from the glare of Hollywood, Depp has been very slowly building a new portfolio of niche projects on his way to bigger things. While there are still several rumors circling the waters arounda sixthPirates of the Caribbeanmovie featuring Deppas Captain Jack Sparrow, that kind of blockbuster appearance still seems a very long way off.

Johnny Depp’s “Likely Offensive” Satan Movie with Iconic Director Finally Gets Filming Update

The Terry Gilliam fantasy movie that sees Depp play Satan and Jeff Bridges as God looks set to finally film later this year.

In images shared online, Depp appears in shabby denim as he made his way to the yacht being used for filming.Day Drinkeris set entirely aboard the yacht where Depp’s character is a “mysterious guest” that gets “entangled with criminal figure Cara Lauzzana (Penélope Cruz).” These images show a much more disheveled appearance than in the official shot of Depp’s character released by Lionsgate last month. You can see some of these images in the post below.

Could ‘Day Drinker’ Be Johnny Depp’s First Real Comeback Chance?

The official logline, which is almost as vague and mysterious as Depp’s character, reads: “InDay Drinker, a private-yacht bartender (Madelyn Cline) encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Johnny Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Penélope Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming.”

Apart from Cline, Depp, and Cruz, the cast also features the likes of Manu Ríos, Aron Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle. It’s going to be produced by John Wick producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, along with Free Guy’s Adam Kolbrenner and screenwriter Zach Dean.

Although the movie wasoriginally pitched as a supernatural vampire movie, details on that side of the coin have been slowly quashed, but with so little known about the film, it could still play a part in the plot. Either with or without a vampire connection, the action crime genre has always been incredibly popular and that could very well give Depp a reasonable hit.

Previously, his appearances inJeanne Du Barryand his directorial effort ofModi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, have been incredibly low-key. An action flick is another beast entirely and will likely get plenty of eyes on it for the reteaming of Depp and Cruz for the first time since they worked together onPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales(akaSalazar’s Revenge).
