Yesterday, Marvel unleashed the first three character posters from the highly-anticipatedDoctor Strange, featuringBenedict Cumberbatchas the title character,Rachel McAdamsasNight NurseandBenedict Wongas Wong, along with new motion posters for each character. It seems that was just the beginning of this one-sheet rollout, with three new character posters featuringTilda SwintonasThe Ancient One,Chiwetel Ejioforas Baron Mordo andMads Mikkelsenas the main villain, Kaecilius. Don’t be surprised if another trio of posters arrives tomorrow to ring in the weekend.
Tilda Swinton’s casting asThe Ancient Onewas quite controversial for a number of fans, since the character was typically portrayed as an Asian male in the comics.C. Robert Cargill, who co-wrote the script with directorScott DerricksonandJon Spaihts, revealed in a podcast earlier this year that The Ancient One is the equivalent ofStar Trek’s Kobayashi Maru, meaning every decision involving this character is “unwinnable,” stating that the character was a “racist stereotype” in the comics. While the controversy over the gender-swapped role appears to have died down, we’ll see how fans react whenDoctor Strangehits theaters on November 4. These posters surfaced onTwitterearlier today.

Mads Mikkelsenwas revealed asKaeciliusin July, with the release of a prequel comic book that revealed he was a former Master of the Mystic Arts alongside The Ancient One and Baron Mordo. We also reported this summer thatCommunitycreatorDan Harmon, who was brought on to work on the script during reshoots, revealed a photo of his computer desktop at Comic-Con, which featured a number ofDoctor Strangedocuments including one marked “Strange Confronts Dormammu”. This was the first we had heard about this iconic villain appearing in the movie, but hopefully we’ll get to see Dormammu soon.
Doctor Strangeexplores the tale of Dr. Stephen Strange, a world-famous neurosurgeon whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place-a mysterious enclave known asKamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange-armed with newly acquired magical powers-is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
