Kevin Feigegave a little insight into the real reason Marvel movies feature post-credits scenes, and it isn’t necessarily just about promoting the next Marvel Studios offering. While speaking during hisHollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony, the Marvel Studios boss explained how working on the biggest franchise in the world is not a solo task, and that is partly why the MCU’s movies include additional scenes after the credits.

Feige received his Walk of Fame star on Thursday, in a ceremony attended by many Marvel stars, such as Brie Larson, Chris Pratt, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman, the latter two of whom spoke about Feige during the presentation.During his own speech, Feige mentioned why he feels it is important for movies to feature additional tags at the end of the credits. He said:

Chris Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), James McAvoy in Split (2016), Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

“Obviously I’m not up here because of anything I have done by myself. Nobody makes this many movies by themselves. I had all this help along the way, and I really think this is why filmmaking is the greatest art form because it is a collaboration, each and every day. It’s why we put tags at the end of our movies. Do you like the tags at the end of our movies?

I like them because it encourages people to sit and watch all the names of the people that made the movie and learn what the positions are, and learn who the people were much like walking through this boulevard encouraged me to learn and to grow and to enter this business I love so much and I will look forward being a part of for the rest of my life.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Popularized Post-Credit Scenes

Although Marvel Studios did not create the post-credits scene, which has been in existence for almost 60 years – the 1966 movieThe Silencersfeatured the first such tag – they have certainly instigated the trend becoming more an expectation than an anomaly in modern movies. From the moment Samuel L. Jackson turned up at Stark Tower at the end ofIron Manto tell Tony Stark he was putting together a team, there have been very few Marvel movies and shows that do not include something at the end of the very long roll-call of the cast of crew.

While the scenes do mean that audiences get to see the names of many of those responsible for the movie, they are used to herald the next chapter in Marvel’s ongoing franchise – even if fans have to wait years for some of those teases to be paid off. However, many Marvel movies feature two additional scenes. This normally provides a future tease after the initial actor credits, and a scene that either closes a story arc from the movie or otherwise acts as an inconsequential little stinger after around 8 minutes of scrolling monikers.

12 Movies Where the Post-Credits Scene Was the Biggest Surprise

The post-credits scene has been a cinematic staple for nearly 60 years, setting up sequels and surprising viewers along the way.

Whether it is thetease of X-Men characters, Avengers eating Schawarma, or Bruce Campbell’s Pizza Poppa shouting, ‘It’s finally over!” fans are always happy to stick around to watch these moments that last only a fraction of the length of the credits that they have sat through to get there. However, it seems that Feige’s overall plan is simply getting audiences to pay a little more attention to the many names of those involved in making the magic of the MCU possible. In that, like many other things, he has brilliantly succeeded.
