Individually,Kristen WiigandJonah Hillhave starred in some of the most wildly popular comedies of the last 20 years. Now they’re joining forces for a new feature with a premise that seems poised to take full advantage of their shared ability to make millions of people laugh.
Varietyreports that Wiig is joining Hill forCut Off, a Warner Bros. comedy he’s set to direct from a script he co-wrote with Ezra Woods. Scheduled for a August 20, 2025 release date, the film revolves around the adventures of a brother and sister who are forced to fend for themselves after their wealthy parents refuse to continue supporting them. Production is scheduled to begin sometime during the fall, with Hill co-producing alongside Matt Dines and Ali Goodwin for his Strong Baby production company; on the studio side, producers include Jesse Ehrman and Zach Hamby. The project is reportedly working from a budget of $50 million.

AlthoughCut Offmarks the first time Hill and Wiig have co-starred in a live-action film, it isn’t their first time working together. In 2012, when Wiig was still aSaturday Night Livecast member and Hill was on the set as guest host, they shared the screen for the viral skit “Liza Minnelli Tries to Turn Off a Lamp”; four years later, they reunited as members of the voice cast forSausage Party, Seth Rogen’s infamously bawdy animatedcomedyabout the NSFW exploits of anthropomorphic foodstuffs.
The ‘Cut Off’ Co-Stars Have Other Releases on the Way
Both co-stars have other projects in the pipeline ahead ofCut Off. Next month, Wiig will be heard inGabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, a big-screen outing for the popular mixed-media television series aimed at preschoolers; additionally, she’s hard at work on the second season ofPalm Royale, her Apple TV+ series about a desperate social climber in the Palm Beach of the late ’60s. No official release date has been announced, but given that filming wrapped several months ago, a 2026 premiere is widely expected.
Hill also has a project lined up for Apple:Outcome, a dark comedy about a recently sober actor whose efforts to make amends with the people hurt by his behavior are complicated by an anonymous blackmailer threatening him with the release of potentially disastrous video footage. As withCut Off, Hill is directing from a script he co-wrote with Woods, and he’ll also co-star; the rest of theOutcomecast includes Keanu Reeves, Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, David Spade, andAll My Childrenlegend Susan Lucci. Intriguingly, Martin Scorsesehas also saidhe plays a part in the film, appearing as a “washed-up agent for young actors.”

Cut Offwill mark a welcome return to the big screen for Hill and Wiig, both of whom have been relatively choosy about on-camera roles in recent years. Hill was most recently seen inYou People, a Netflix comedy released in early 2023; Wiig, meanwhile, has been focused onPalm Royaleand voice work since 2021, when she starred inBarb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.
