SyFy is looking to expand their offering of shows based on characters from the DC Comics universe, as they’re now in the works on aLoboseries. This comes as the character is set to make his debut, as portrayed by Emmett J. Scanlan, inKryptonseason 2, which kicks off this week. How firmly the spin-off series would be connected to the Superman prequel show remains to be seen. In any event, this is happening.
The announcement has been made by SyFy thatLobois officially in development. It’s said the series will follow “a foul-mouthed, dangerous, irascible, intergalactic bounty hunter.” The show is being developed in partnership with Warner HorizonScripted Television.Kryptonexecutive producer/writer Cameron Welsh has been tapped to pen the spin-off series. Should things actually move forward, Welsh will also serve as a producer onLobo.
It hasn’t yet been confirmed whether or notEmmet J. Scanlanwill reprise his role, though that would seem to make the most sense. Should the network move forward with a pilot, it’s likely the network would close a deal with the actor to return to the role.
For those who may not be familiar,Lobowas created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen for DC in the 1980s. The character hails from theplanet of Czarniaand he’s the last survivor of his civilization. Why, you may ask? Well, because he single-handedly destroyed everyone on his homeworld, making him the last of his race. So yes, he’s pretty evil.Lobo, generally speaking, is portrayed as a mercenary who traverses the galaxy, on space motorcycle no less, doing dirty deeds for hire.
Lobohas long been viewed by Warner Bros. as a character who can successfully make the jump from page to screen. For roughly fifteen years, in some form or another, a movie centered on the character has been in development. In its most recent iteration, the hope is that Michael Bay may direct. Though, we haven’t heard any updates on that project in some time. It’s unclear if news of this series will have any effect on the studio’s decision to pursue a big screen version of the franchise as well. We’ve heard in the past that Warner Bros. likes to avoid, whenever possible, having multiple versions of the sameDC charactersgoing at the same time. Since the small screen and big screen universes aren’t connected, that sometimes gets tricky.
It was originally revealed in July 2018 that SyFy planned to bringLobotoKryptonseason 2. The cast for that series includes Cameron Cuffe, Blake Ritson, Shaun Sipos, Colin Salmon, Georgina Campbell, Wallis Day, Ann Ogbomo, Aaron Pierre, Hannah Waddingham, Kem and Ian McElhinney.
