While it wasfirst announced back in 2021, and since the latest and now incredibly successful iteration ofBarbiewas still in early stages, the movie about the then-most popular mini-doll in the world was considered conceptual at best, particularly with the inclusion of controversial writer and director Lena Dunham. ThePolly Pocketmovie, which also set to be a live-action adaptation of the popular mini-doll line, may very well follow a similar storytelling structure as its now-established predecessorBarbie, but there are essentially little to no details yet on what kind of plot the new film will have. All that has been revealed so far, from the project’s current producer Robbie Brenner, is that beyond its initial announcement two years ago, a “great” script has now been submitted and its main writer Lena Dunham received praise for her creative work. Lily Collins, who starred with Sandra Bullock in biography dramaThe Blind Side(2009) and can currently be seen in Netflix’s ongoing romantic-comedy drama seriesEmily in Paris, is set to star in the film in an undisclosed role, and is the only announced cast so far. Dunham, who has made some controversial headlines in recent years, has previously worked on films likeSharp Stick(2022) andCatherine Called Birdy(2022), along with her most well-known comedy-drama seriesGirls, which she created and starred in. She’s now hopping on the Mattel train to bring Polly Pocket to life from the little heart-shaped dollhouse to the big screen, and had this to say about bringing Lily Collins aboard:
“It’s been an amazing collaboration. Lena is so collaborative and rolls up her sleeves and really likes to roll around in notes and listen. She’s incredible. Lily is so smart and so specific and so productorial. It’s just been an incredible collaboration, so we are thrilled about it. Hopefully, we’ll be making that at some point in the future.”
The Colorful, Tiny History of Polly Pocket
Polly Pocket dolls first hit shelves across the U.K. in the 1980s, initially created by Chris Wiggs as a gift for his daughter Kate. His inspiration for the toy came from a makeup compact, in which he envisioned a small, cute dollhouse playset inside, along with the Polly Pocket mini-doll. With the help of Bluebird Toys, he created the first line of pocket-sized Polly Pocket toys, each containing a distinctly different playset that Polly could play in within the little, pastel-colored cases. Mattel caught wind of it and stepped forward to purchase the brand, bringing the toy over the U.S. where it blew up in popularity throughout the 1990s. The Polly Pocket toy line underwent different changes in the next decade, opting for larger, customizable dolls similar to the concept of Barbie. However, a few years ago, Garrett Sander of Mattel announced that Polly would be returning to nearly her original miniature size, with a grand re-envisioning of the original pocket-size dollhouse cases that have long since made them so collectible.
